Bump to see if this is a common problem.
Oh yeah, I also had my boost pressure sensor go out 3 months after the car was delivered (with 5k miles). This turbo system is starting to concern me. |

HOLY CRAP... my car makes this exact same noise... sounds like a metallic buzzing on decelleration.. I thought it was a heat sheild/exhaust thing too! You can actually here it better on the passanger side of the car, but it sounds like its under the engine
It was really bad a few months ago, and now it went away mostly, but it is still there I was about to take my car in, and almost forgot to mention this! Thanks for the thread |

Same problem once more.It seems to be more and more cars with problem in the wastegates. What happens if this comes after warranty. The turbos cost a lot of money.

My car goes in tomorrow to have both actuators replaced. was in last week and they diagnosed the problem. Its been making the noise for about 4 months and i thought it was a heatshield. car has vihnu exhaust and v2.
problem was there before i got both i think!!

Oh my! Sounds like another problem just like the fuel pump! I remember reading a TSB about this problem, apparently it said that BMW Tech Engineers are still trying to figure out whats causing the problem. Looks like they narrowed it down to the wastegates already. Although I'm sure they're asking to replace your whole turbo so they can figure out whats causing the problem. Were you still able to drive the car even with the ticking? No fault codes were thrown on your computer right?

On my car the turbo that went out was the rear turbo (cylinders 4, 5, 6).
I remember reading somewhere that bypassing the boost solenoid (as is required with several of the piggyback setups) puts more stress on the rear turbo. Seems like this problem is common in cars where people are doing this (not sure if it's just common in general - I guess it could be). I did it briefly because I had a JBS2 in. I took it out before the service appt. to investigate the ticking... never put it back in. I'de like to hear more from those who know about the intricacies of bypassing the boost solenoids and long term effects. I think I'll leave my JBS2 out until I've done enough research on the subject. If so I would demand having it replaced citing that this issue can have effects on boost pressure which is a serious concern to you. You can also site the fact that you know several other people who had the issue and had their turbos replaced due to the issue. If they continue to be stubborn, try a different dealer or open up a case with BMWNA. |
