They're also a sports car, which the 335 is not.

Trade in Values
If you take care of your cars - which I am sure all of you do - don't trade in your car at a dealer. I was recently offered $14K for my perfect '03 530i! I asked them if they looked at it Ended up selling it for $18.5K.
Seriously I have purchased 13 new cars over the last 30 years and I think I traded 4 of them. One of them was a Porsche 944 for a 911. Nobody wanted the 944 in a private sale . And the 911 Targa had the worst resale value of any car I owned on a percentage value retained basis. On to number 14 - BMW #3 - a 335xi Coupe. |

That's funny because a lot of people say the same thing about your 335 when comparing it to an M3. I call those people tools.

Dealers in general want you to believe your car is worth whatever they'll tell you it's worth. Don't ever trade your car in would be the best advice I can think of. It'll cost you several grand in "lazy tax" |

I'm not sure where the confusion lies. Wholesale value = x. What the OP or we paid is y. Dealership makes profit on new car, in this scenario Porsche. Dealer makes profit on trade i.e. several if not over 5k, i.e. 335. Dealer will never, ever give anything more than wholesale for a trade, they are not in the business to inventory vehicles. When they write higher than wholesale on paper, it helps sell the new car because that much more is not taxed. But what they write over wholesale gets taken out of the discount on the new vehicle. These are not exactly mysteries of the car business. Even a caveman can go on the web and see a 335 loses 8-10k as soon as it's driven off the lot. If dealers weren't in it to profit on both transactions, why would private party sales even exist?

In southern cal, it seems that mostly men of an "alternative" lifestyle drive boxsters.

It seems to me that getting rid of your car within a year of purchase means either you didn't do your research first and picked the wrong car OR you have enough money that taking a beating on a quick change shouldn't bother you too much.
I say keep the 335 for a couple more years. Great car and when you get dinged later it won't feel so bad because of the years of driving enjoyment. |

I was actually gonna go for a boxter S instead of the 335, but then i thought to myself that i wasn't ready for a porsche just yet, since the BMW is awesome anyway. However, i test drove the boxter and it is an awesome car.

sometimes, however, you can get a decent trade-in for your car (and yes, sometimes it's less of a hassle).
i traded in my 02 honda prelude 5-spd (base model) for my 330i. i had tried to sell it on craigslist for low KBB value (around 12-13k), until i saw the exact SAME model cars sitting on dealer lots going for 9.5k. i went to a dealer to look at a 330i w/ the spec that i wanted. the salesman became vested in making the deal, because he knew that for the right price, we would purchase the car then and there. however, he wouldnt budge beyond a certain number, so then he mentioned a possible trade in. i filled out the information sheet for my honda, disclosed that it had been in TWO accidents, and also gave him all the paperwork for both accidents (being an engineer, i had always been anal retentive about how the car had been repaired). despite this, he ended up offering me 9k for the trade-in, which i felt was a good amount. long story short, if the guy wants to make a sale, he can move a bit on the trade-in. |

It can't hurt to look into trade-in sometimes. BMW gave me $20k for my 2006 Civic Si with 10,000 miles when I got my 335.. Not bad for a car that stickered at $22k.

Boxster is a really nice car and is no comparison to our sports sedan or coupe really.(on the handling front) Yet i would not trade a 335 for a boxster i mean u have the take the depreciation and in the end u get cars that are the same level. I would say you either go for a second hand 911 or don't trade ur car
