The proper way to clear adaptations is using BMW software INPA or ISTA/D. I heard on several occasions that disconnecting the battery for 24hr with negative and positive wires shorted accomplish the same. Hard to believe considering that adaptations are store in DME EEPROM.

Just out of interest, what are the year models of these two cars, and what engine model numbers do they both have (should be visible where the engine number is)? Both are obviously manual? Does the sport model have active steering?

Thanks for the response everyone. The indy repair shop I took it to wasn't able to find any faults in the system (which apparently still does not rule out the vanos solenoid issue) but I had them remove and flush the solenoids. They also cleared the adaptations and the car does drive significantly different...better throttle response all throughout the range but most noticeable at high rpm past 4,500. The power delivery still feels somewhat different between the two cars (still less of a vtec kick to the non sport model but it is stronger and more linear past 4,500...it drives more the way na BMW's have driven in the past). If I had to guess, I would put my money on the adaptation clearing procedure.
