500 hp 738 lb-ft

Audi brought some more of its Le Mans-conquering technology to the street in the form of the new R8 V-12 TDI. The R8 V12 TDI is a concept that melds the 6.0L V-12 diesel from last years Q7 concept with the award winning R8 sports car. The concept engine shares a cylinder count with the race-winning R10, but it's actually a completely new engine with a 60-degree bank angle instead of the 90 degrees used on the race engine. While the 500 hp is only par for the course in its class, the 738 lb-ft of torque is enough to shred all four tires with ease. While the R8 V12 TDI storms to 62mph in 4.2 seconds and maxes out at 186mph, it also manages to get 23 MPG. The combination of a 29,000-psi direct-inject fuel injection system, particulate filters and urea injection allows this beast to pass 2014 EuroVI emissions standards, too. Check out our live high-res images of the R8 V12 TDI in the gallery below

Volkswagen is working on a new hard-edged ‘R’ version of its Touareg SUV to join the Passat R36 and Golf R32 in its performance car lineup. Unlike the gasoline engines found in the R36 and R32, AutoTelegraaf reports that the R-Touareg will get a more powerful version of the 4.9L V10 TDI diesel engine. Apparently, the information was leaked by an overzealous VW employee during a media presentation.

German tuners have already squeezed around 365hp from this engine, but this engine is all about the massive torque figures, which should border on the ridiculous with the uprated engine. The standard model gets 750Nm, but at least one tuner has broken the 850Nm mark already. It’s also likely the Touareg will be called the R50 if it follows the naming convention of its stablemates.

The final version will most likely resemble the R-line Touareg (pictured) that’s currently available as a package through VW Individual, VW’s own customizing company. Expect the R-Touareg to feature a similar bumper design, the same subtle spoilers and a sporty wheel and tire combo.

It’s possible this Touareg will be joined by a more powerful 450hp version equipped with a W12 engine, but it seems unlikely as it would be competition for the Audi Q7 V12 TDI.

We'll just have to wait for the V8 diesel 3 three series then!

Back on topic I've never noticed the smell of the particulate filter regenerating or the car staying in fith gear when it does it.

Must explain those brown stains on my outlets.

Regards

Chris

[QUOTE=m.rk77;2181645]bmw particulate filter regeneration takes place every 300 to max 2000 km. It takes place when you drive at an average speed of 50 km/h for 20 minutes. Computer will take over and your vehicle will drive as in Sport mode. The particulate filter will heat up in order to burn everything that's stuck inside of it.

BMW diesel owners: Do you have a strong burnt smell when this particulate filter regenerates?

Yes! Thank you so much for asking this question! I thought I was going crazy. Several weeks after buying the car, I was doing some errands around town. On the drive back home (about 15 minutes), I was talking on the phone, pulled into the driveway and stayed in the car to finish my conversation. Within seconds I noticed a strong smell (of what I described as being a bit like burnt sugar). It was so strong that I felt compelled to get off the phone right away and check my house to see if it was on fire. I got out of the car, opened the garage and didn't smell a thing. I went back to the car and still smelled a strong smell of something burning. It was definitely coming from the car, and it only started (or was only noticeable) when I was no longer driving the car on the street.

I called the service department at the only dealer in town and they didn't know what I was talking about. They said that sometimes drivers can smell the smell of diesel when they drive. I was surprised to hear that. I hadn't noticed that at all. The smell of something burning scared the cr*p out of me. I drove the car again a few hours later. There was no smell at all. I've been driving the car for a month since then, and the smell has never come back.

Could it be that the smell is only noticeable if you are no longer driving the car? Maybe most drivers park the car, get out and go away from the car soon after parking. Perhaps only those of us who coincidentally linger in, or around, the car notice what's going on.

Also, could it be that the first regeneration is the most stinky? It wasn't overwhelming, but it was still strong enough to make me get out of the car to see if the house was on fire.

Again, thanks for mentioning this issue and describing the likely source of the issue. It scared me half to death when it happened.

I've 45 kmls and never smelled it, or felt it. I've seen it twice though on my OBD reader. Interval was 1200 mls which might be the upper limit if you do motorways. I can see the regeneration as the OBD reader picks up exhaust temp & it now flashes a light when above 500C. Typically it is around 350C (motorway..), on regeneration it goes to pretty exactly 600C. It's obvious the temperature is created by late fuel injection. I can't see how you can feel this, and it works well in 6th on a MT. As soon as you come off the throttle (corner / traffic light etc) the temp will drop to 200-300C and the late injection has stopped. On the motorway it takes a little over 10 minutes to complete regeneration.

And other thing is if the engine was in EGR mode (throttle valve partially closed), when it starts the late injections the commanded EGR changes to 0%, ie max opening of the valve.
Also this throttle valve movement i can not feel - exception is quick on/off throttle movements in for example a corner where i notice delay in power - guess the valve went to max EGR and can't open fast enough to follow the throttle.

regards,

Your first post in this thread (from over a year ago) proves you didn't know anything about it then.

The newest post doesn't move that forward at all.

Try and read a bit slower, you'll see that the effect is like sport mode, holding onto gears a little longer allowing higher revs. A side effect - not that it actually requires you to engage sport - or even your brain

You lack the finesse and touch to realise when it is happening.

Your logic is flawed. You have proved nothing. You are not in possesion of any facts. You have never read your users manual.

The regen does not need you to sit at a steady fixed speed. Which for most people is very difficult these days.

How would anybody stuck in a big city sit at 50 mph for a long time.

Think it through, Carl.

Ok thankyou, What you said is what i mean... Im happy with that.

Now that proves the Bullshit theory of sitting at a constant speed for X amount of time for it to actually regen. My point proved.. thanks.

If you want to use the old proof by contradiction tactic ..... I am waiting for your contradiction.

Normally that won't take long

Mine regenn'd over the weekend..

It hung onto the gears longer, the engine revs stayed higher.

Caramel sickly type smell from exhaust

Marked increase in fuel consumption.

One would assume that is an artifact of it holding gears for longer?
