To your point, certainly 'X' amount of cleaner will dilute Y' amount of a given lubricant, but that same 'X' amount of cleaner won't continue to dilute 'Y+Z+...' amounts of lubricant like some people seem to think. In other words, running it longer doesn't have any potentially beneficial or harmful effects than running it a short time, it just won't have any added positive effects if left in that much longer. No cumulative effect, good or bad, in other words. I am curious if any studies have been done to see what the effect of the re-liquefied sludge and residues has to potentially offset that lubrication dilution effect of the cleaner though. All I know is, like you mentioned, using crankcase cleaners in high mileage cars has never been detrimental to how they run when I've used them according to directions. Always a nice benefit, which makes it well worth the money.
