Selling the car isn't the solution as the car isn't that bad but the financing is. If she can't refinance a year old loan on a used car for a lower rate than 15% then she has really bad credit. Burning car sets her up for jail so maybe worth considering. Bankruptcy might be an option. You cosigning on a loan is also an option but it all comes down to how much you want to make her problem your problem.

Aside from leaving her, you can let her learn from her financial mistake.
The best thing that you mentioned is that you are waiting for her to get her act together. That's critical. Unless this is directly affecting you financially, I would let her figure out how to get out of this mess. Guide her, but don't bail her out. If it is affecting you financially, pay off the car ASAP or refinance with title under your name, and she makes the payments. On paper, haver her sell the car to you, so if anything should happen, you own the car. Hope you find a solution.

I assume she lives with you OP? If so leave the car next to my job on Biscayne BLVD. Very shady at night with the keys on the windshield.
EDIT: GAP insurance I hope?

Selling the car at this point makes no sense unless you are having problems with it.
You should: 1) refinance it. Cosign and use your cash if you trust her. 2) tell her to get a second/weekend job to pay it off faster. If she is not willing to do 1 and 2 you should really consider ending this relationship. |

If you will just keep on catching her on every mistake she made, then she will just keep doing the same thing over and over again. Someone's gonna catch her anyway right?
Now about your upside down, get rid of the car ASAP and take public transpo. But if she really need a car, lease something cheap. At least the lower monthly and money factor can probably give you or her some time to catch up with the finances. Just my $0.01. Last edited by Boxtyp3; 09-18-2015 at 07:11 PM.. |

Sell the car privately to recoup as much money as you can. Then get cheap beater for her to use temporary (or tell her to take public transportation).
She definitely has some serious issues with handling her finance! From personal experience, i would think real hard before making the big commitment with her (if i was u). |

But I would seriously consider not helping her out financially. Because she really needs to learn money management. As suggested, she should be picking up a part time job to pay off this thing. Have you had a serious talk with her about the money situation? If you're waiting for her financial situation to get better before marrying her, make it clear to her that you're not marrying her until she learns how to manage money better. I'd also put a deadline on when she needs to get her act together. I don't know both of your financial situations in terms of income, outstanding debt, etc. So you'll have to formulate the deadline and goals she needs to reach. If she isn't willing to do this, as suggested by others, I'd seriously consider moving on. As for the suggestion to sell the car, that'll put you all in the same situation and probably worse. If there's nothing wrong with the car, why get rid of it? If you sell it, you've gotten rid of a good car which takes you from point A to B with good fuel economy, realized the financial hit she took when she bought the car, and then what? Buy another car...another depreciating asset? |

Update Her father has offered to loan 6k to allow us to sell the car for 10k or 11k and get rid of it, Problem with this is she has not saved enough money (I tell her to put $ away weekly) to buy a cash car or anything to drive which means any car that gets bough will be "my" car and from "my money". SMDH don't know what to do |

The car is not the issue, the GF is. Keep the car and let her learn her lesson, as long as she is learning it. If she is not, time for a replacement (GF not car).
The real issue to FOCUS (no pun intended) on is fixing her credit so she is not in the same situation next year and the next year, and so on. Credit can be fixed relatively easily and relatively quickly, it just takes some tenacity, communication, and good record keeping/logging of every person you speak with regarding her credit. First thing, pull her reports and get started fixing them. Free report authorized by federal law; https://www.annualcreditreport.com/index.action |

It would really suck to not get that great new job because of credit reporting that can be fixed with some time and effort. Saved several guys careers by helping them fix their credit during my time in the military, pain in the a$$ but it can be done. |
