I use a Nokia Windows phone.

Pros:
These things may be common to all smartphones; I don't know, but they are the features that I like/require.
  • It has the apps I feel I want to use and it works very well. I've never had it crash or get hung up.
  • It's very audible both at the ear and as a speakerphone.
  • Integrates perfectly with my personal and corporate Outlook email.
  • Integrates well with Hotmail.
  • Battery lasts for about a day and a half before the phone tells me it's low. The 1.5 day duration is when I'm on it a lot (Conference calls, other calls, and email checking are mostly what I do on the phone. I'm on phone calls for about 6-8 hours a day in total.)
  • Talk-to-text (T2T) works very well provided I don't slur my speech. It could be better on punctuation, but for texting, I can live with a missing punctuation mark.
  • It integrates well with my F10, including the T2T feature and other voice commands.
  • When I tap on an address, the phone automatically will map it and give me directions.
  • Very intuitive to use. Haven't yet felt compelled to read the directions for the thing.
  • Price: I paid $50 for it, and it came with a nice Bluetooth earpiece, wall charger and car charger.
  • Charges using any micro-USB equipped cord.
Cons:
Again, I don't know if these things are common to all smartphones.
  • Can't change the font size of the text displayed in stored entries such as the address book. No issue entering the data or seeing the entry/element headers. Reading things like the digits of a phone number or email address for a contact after I've entered it requires me to put on my glasses.
  • Hard to see onscreen content in bright sunlight. It's very good in overcast conditions and indoors.
  • Can't access calls history while on a phone call. I don't need to do that often at all, but I have wanted to do it two or three times over the past several years.
All the best.

P.S.
Why do phone stores make it so hard, nigh impossible, to try out a phone before buying it? Most of them only have demonstration models on their sales floor, but they aren't connected to anything so you can't really tell how the thing performs/operates. Look and feel of the phone itself generally has nothing to do with whether I like Phone A better than Phone B. Are not most folks of that same mentality?

I had issues with my droid and me BMW Bluetooth. It was disconnect on its own and it was annoying. I wasn't crazy with the Internet and the picture quality. The phone volume on a call was extremely low too for me

Well, I can offer that for talk and texting, my Windows phone hasn't had any such issues in my F10. My e92 doesn't support the talk-to-text functionality but it's never arbitrarily disconnected the phone.

I don't have any personal experience using an Android phone. I have plenty of experience speaking on the phone with others who have one. Of those folks, with one user I've noticed that often -- as in, I've never noticed it with other types of phones -- I can't understand what they are saying very well and that their voice cuts in and out. (That person has a Galaxy 5 and uses Verizon.)

Seeing as it's just one person out of hundreds, the problem may be unique to his device more so than being characteristic for Androids. The person has suggested that he thinks it may be due to the battery being weak. Maybe that's what is causing it; from my end, it just seems like poor signal strength or the phone is having a hard time keeping hold of the signal.

Given that you know you don't care for several important-to-you aspects of an Android phone, I think you need to go with either Apple or Windows phone, regardless of how satisfied others may be with their Android phones.

Are you confident the call volume issue you have is the phone's volume not being loud enough? Hearing loss, which is a natural occurrence for everyone, may be the culprit. It could be that your hearing is fading faster than other folks in much the way some folks' vision fades faster than other folks.

With vision loss, it was with the text on my phone becoming unreadable that I first noticed it. Maybe something similar is what you're experiencing with your phone volume?

The person I noted above mentioned he wasn't keen on the volume either when I asked him what he thought of his phone. He said he installed an app called Audio Boost and that it helped. Have you installed that app?

All the best.

I have been using iPhones for some years now (started with 3GS). I thought about switching to Android every now and then in the past year or so (perhaps because those Samsung ads got to me). I think the main draw was that you can do much more on Android (customization, newer features, free apps, etc.). I thought about it some more though and realize that I don't use my phone to do much. Usually it's just text, phone calls here and there, check email, listen to music and surf the Internet. All of that can be accomplished on any phone. I decided to stick with Apple because of the ease of use and that it's fluid. Everything on the iPhone has been optimized to work with other parts. For me, even though it is much more expensive than Android phones, I just want something that works and is reliable.

I have been through a lot of phones and it really is a matter of personal preference. I personally don't prefer one to the other and almost at all times have one of each and switch them around. Right now I have the Passport, S6 Edge and have the iPhone 6S on pre-order. In the past year I must have gone through 30 phones or so as I keep getting bored. Long story short, use a couple of various OS's and see what you like and stick to that if you can.

I use Apple because I prefer the simplicity and complete integration without complication.

Sometimes, simple is more...

Truly, that is exactly why haven't upgraded my Windows phone. At my life stage, figuring out how to operate a new phone is a "complication."

All the best.

No apple because I can't trace the parts. No android because I have serious paranoia about security. I'm in team windows since Nokia, and I kinda have a thing for Billie Gates.

(well, he made his own home state great. He's made this a tech center and I don't have to be in the sun)

Meh, Nokia connections.

My phones rock all the 2 months I keep them alive.

Yeah, I fuck around with the tech market, but as stated, I don't make apple bucks with it. The hippie in me that doesn't apparently die refuses to invest any resources badly.

Fuck, I can't even buy google. Never could.

After 3 android phones of mine died, screen went bad, battery over heated. my wife still had the same iPhone. So I said...ok I give let me try an iPhone. That was in 2008 and been with them ever since. Five of us all have 6+ and love them. I went as far as getting a Mac mini and adding a SSD to it along with 16 GB ram. Wife has iPad mini. Kids have Mac book's. Everything running fine and no disappointments. Being able to go from one device on the go and come home and pickup where you left off is priceless to me. I will be an apple customer for life......why? Because they have never given me a reason to not like their products.

Well, there's no doubt that you haven't owned a Windows Phone in over a dozen years. But that's not really saying much, now is it?. The first one was released in 2010, wasn't it?

[Yes. I'm messin' witcha, mainly because I'm a close reader of nearly everything and the first thought that crossed my mind was, "Well, duh, seeing as they haven't existed for 12 years." I'm aware that prior to "Windows Phone," the devices were variously called "Pocket PCs," and "Windows Mobile" devices, and, yes, they ran Microsoft Windows OSes. I suspect that's what you had in mind more so than what are now expressly marketed as "Windows Phones."]

All the best.

Actually, Google has been among the best things I have bought; it's not often I get 800%+ gains on something I buy. You missed out letting that one go, and I say that even as someone whose only other regular interaction with Google is via their search engine. LOL

All the best.

tony20009 - Pocket PC ran windows...so, yes - I consider it a Windows phone, because it was a PHONE Had 2 versions in early 2000...

Agree, both GOOG and AAPL have been unreal with respect to growth since mid/early 2000's...

I am debating to get a Nexus 6 for 350 on amazon w/ warranty and wait until 2016 for the snapdragon 820 chip which is by the way a monster. 3x faster than the 810 and is able to detect which network has the strongest signal vs. constantly trying to refresh for a LTE signal. Or wait a few more weeks and get the Nexus 6p or 5x. I cracked my Sony Z3 recently and got stuck using a iphone 5 and I hate it so much.

Working in the industry for 8 years at two of the busiest stores in my state. Buy what you like. Apple is far from perfect in terms of reliabiltiy but compared to android it seems like a Toyota(reliabiltiy) compared to a 10 year old Land Rover. They have gotten better but..

Windows has always been a joke to us. Everyone cringes when someone buys one or brings it in. It obviously has its pros but they are limited.

Simple test.. Take a premium android phone and an iPhone and pull up a YouTube video. iPhone almost always is faster eventhough android is a google product.

Android has come a long ways now and I always carry one for work, but only use it if I have to.

I was an anti Apple advocate until I had an iPhone demo..now I have a MacBook Pro, Apple TV, iPhone, and ipad(only because I won it).

If I had to use android I would, but I would pay a large amount of money to use apple(as I do now).

Ive always had iPhones for work, and Androids for personal use.

I am guessing the iPhones are always on sale, because they dont integrate with anything I use for work and I can't figure out why they are always chosen.

Only reason to get an iPhone imo, is because you have all Apple products. Getting them to integrate with anything other than Apple products is tedious, where as my android can link up with everything pretty easily. They are also a simpler interface, so if a complicated phone, albeit not very complicated, is a turn off, then the iPhone wins. That is why my Dad loves his iPhones. But he also buys them because all his friends have them so that just confirms Torgus theory.

And stay away from Windows phones. They consistently get low scores and have a history of not being able to keep up with the current performance standards.
