Absolutely no doubt that it's thermostats stuck back open if the temp drops as soon as the radiator starts having air flowing through it.

If you want to save some MPG and don't mind the ghetto fix looks, just cover the front vents for now, will help the car get up to temperature. Can't imagine it would overheat as theres still loads more spaces for air to get in, along with the ambient temps.

Yeah I'm pretty much 100% sure myself now that it's the main thermostat. Tried to gather a wee bit of info. Reset the mpg and average speed computers. This was my findings

During drive
Maximum temp - 71 degrees
Minimum temp - 60 degrees
Hovering about 62/63 degrees


Average mpg - 34.5
Average speed - 30.9
Time driving - 34 minutes
Distance driven - 26miles

Temp on idle - additional 13 minutes 82 degrees

It's pretty conclusive from that the thermostat is stuck open. Gonna go to BMW tomorrow and get the oem thermostat. Hopefully get more than 7 months out of it haha. I've owned the car for 3 years now n the thermostats are the only trouble I've had really so can't complain much. Appreciate the feed back from everyone

Hi

Ive got a 325d 2009 reg. My mpg was 27-30 mpg. I dont know what the ect was. I replaced the egr thermostat with one from a main car parts supplier in a behr box (but I noticed a sign/symbol had been rubbed off).

Now I'm getting according to the computer 40+ mpg on local roads. However my engine temperature fluctuates between 78 and 82 (outside temp is 8-10.5 degrees). (It did read 87 the other day in traffic) but it doesnt achieve 90+ degrees. Is that ok for a 325d bearing in mind I assume it would be cooler than a 330d/35d? (then my dpf filter sign came on)
Im getting very hot internal air. (I gather from other posts its the main thermostat?)

any help would be appreciated.

All engines will run at around 90c.

Your main stat is probably leaking slightly, assuming its original.

so I assume the egr thermostat with the rubbed out sign is not an original as the salesman stated. Just out of curiosity why grind the name out? (I thought behr/mahle supplied bmw)

Last question replace main thermostat or continue bleeding system just to make sure that there is no air lock?

10 deg below is most likely the main stat gone as well, or opening too early at least, there can E multiple faults but the most common is complete failure.

The manufacturers can't sell the parts with the BMW logo on, so have to remove it. It's cheaper to employ people to do this rather than change tooling.

87-88c is correct opening points for the thermostats, will usually fluctuate around that number+/- a few deg.

I will change the main thermostat.

But one last observation yesterday when I parked my car after a 20 minute drive the temperature rose to 91c as soon as I started to drive it went back down to 80 - is that anything noteworthy or indicative of the main thermostat?

It's meaningless, when there's no air flowing through the radiator the car will of course start to heat up. It's the fact the thermostat can't block off the radiator that means it drops.

Thank you for all your help -I changed the main stat and my average temperature within 10 mins is 88c (+/- 2 c). (I used a genuine bmw stat)

Last question in regards to the dpf should I now drive it for a while on the motorway/A road, say a constant 60mph?or try a stationary dpf regen?

(I believe from what I read the regen is dependent on the engine temp?)

Just drive the car normally.

If your normal drive cycle doesnt include any dual-carridgeway or motorway driving, then yeh its maybe worthwhile having a decent drive somewhere

Well, I had to take a painful hit 4 days before xmas.......For months my car has not re-generated and the temps never ever got over 73 degrees......Ran a diagnostic via Carly app and 3 glow plug errors and a DPF error. Purchased both thermostats from BMW Cotswold at a good price (Thanks Phil) and 6 glow plugs and gasket from Euro Car Parts....Wow, what a difference....acceleration feels so much smoother and responsive, plus temps are reaching 92-93 degrees and regenerating nicely.......
