thats the same noise when I start my car...You are just bugging out too much and have a placebo thing going on....Nothing wrong with your car if its at a cold idle, once it warms it should be a drop different! Remember you have installed a CAI and taking off the airbox also created less dampening from the tick noise!! Since i installed my cai, i noticed the ticking to be a little louder

All I can say is WOW! My car does not make that noise. Sounds like an old Mercedes diesel. Best of luck with the repair.

Not bugging out. I have had this noise for awhile now. Im use to it. I was just wondering if it was normal or not. Also, the ticking was just as loud and occurred at the same times even before the CAI install....

well I have to say the ticking while I think its normal, the acceleration and deceleration noise is not normal...Sorry about thinking it was a placebo thing...but revving the engine and hearing that ticking before the rpms go back down is definately not normal!

yeh the ticking noise is normal from what i hear during idle but what makes me concerned about your car is revving to 3000 rpms and ticking noise with rattles sounds coming after the rpms decrease is what i deem to be abnormal...Yeah hope u fix it soon...let us know what they say

Yep, that's the same noise I was describing (best heard at the very end of the video clip).

Fairly sure it's the wastegate problem. They repaired mine by replacing the rear turbo (cylinders 4, 5, 6). Not sure if the problem is more prevalent in one turbo or the other.

If the dealer say's its normal, tell them to call BMWNA and look into the TSB for wastegate failures.

Anyone have the TSB number for this? Tried a search and found nothing.

mine is different than the video's one. I am going to record it tonight for sure and post it. Again mine happens all the time, the faster the cars goes, the same apply for the ticking/clicking noise.

Please keep us posted. BTW how audible is this clicking sound when you have the music on? I saw AU335's vid and it seems like if you drive with moderate-high level of music, you will not hear it.

check in here:

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=124626

With music, moderate high, if you are at about or over 3k rpms, you can hear it . So bad, that sometimes i turn off the radio, roll down the windows and get my head out to hear it better because it kinda worries me a little. My friend drove the car last week, i could hear the noise from distance.

I think there is a similar issue being discussed on a different thread (see below). Some people think it's the valve lifters, but no one has been 100% certain.

In another thread, someone described a noise almost like pebbles in a beer can when you shake it. It sounds like that on your decelerations from when your revving it... I believe that's bad when you hear that...

Noise

I have the same sound, brought it in to the dealer and they refused to fix it since "there is nothing wrong". I am subscribed to this tread, please if anyone has a solution to this awful clicking noise at about 3k rpm let me know.

My car has the same noise, but not as loud as yours. It's annoying as hell, but mine does it only at idle when cold. Sounds like a god damn diesel....
