I thought the Sugar in the gas tank was an urban legend.

I understand that anything BUT gas in your gas tank is bad... but does anyone have a mythbuster on this topic?

Obviously someone didn't like you so they vandalized your car. Sugar in the tank is nothing new, you should just claim it on your insurance and next time try not pissing people off

i just figure, anything that isnt made to be put into a fuel tank, probably isnt good for the car at all.

i still wanna hear the story on how this all started btw.

I used to live in a pretty posh neighborhood in montreal
and some punk hippies went around trying to put sugar in all SUVs in the neighborhood...

they managed to break into my friend's gas tank and they put it in.. his car still runs fine... yah, forced entry was obvious on gas tanks... hippies got arrested and sent to jail... tons of people pressed charges

well, I suppose there would already be a difference when testing on a car with injectors, not to mention the HPFP and direct injection in the N54. Imagine a layer of caramel on those fine components...

Those few episodes of mythbusters I watched convinced me of this:
- Some tests they do tend to be devious and often out of practise (like testing the sugar in a tank on a car with a carburator while 99,99% of cars use injectors)
- I dont really like their style. I'm a Euro caveman. Top Gear FTW

i got one for you guys. ex g/f broke up with me. ok w/e no problem. i was driving my dads 03 m5 the day we broke up. for what ever reason she is really pissed off with me. let me remind you she broke up with me. but that night i go to my friends house and while i was there she put suger in the m. lucky at myfiends house he has security sencers all over the place. she triped one of them which ativiated the camera. long story short we saw she did and luckly it was just dumping out the current gas( just fill the the damn thing up) and taking out the gas tank. cleaning it really well and set. i got luckly with this one she got 400 hours of community service for this one. sry

That was my thinking. I worked at a dealership when a car came in that had sugar poured in the valve cover oil filler. Now THAT caused damage. Figure if someone has access to your fuel door they just as easily can pop the hood.

I tend to agree, their test method have a lot to be desired. Also got the feeling a few times they have public service agenda to show things like sugar in the tank will damage the car engine as Busted so people do not get any bright ideas.

They did similar thing about speed cameras, they said no method works, even the license plate covers, which I have seen them work since they diffuse the light. Law enforcement would not be happy if they told the world how to beat these systems.

Oh, the way around fact that sugar does not dissolve in gas, you first dissolve it in water then pour it into the tank. That is way it was explained to me is you ever wanted to seek revenge. There was a couple of reason for that. First you're guarantee to get most of the 5 pounds into the engine as quickly as possible and most important, it is so much easier to pour a gallon of super saturated sugar water into a tank of gas then it is to pour 5 pounds of sugar down the filler hose.
All I know, is I have seen an engine that ate sugar, and it is not a pretty site. But you would hope the filter would catch it, I can not speak to whether the engine had a fuel filter since it was older car.
