I'm not a sysadmin but I have the necessary skills and experience to fill the shoes of one.
I'm more specialized in Exchange and BES. Was offered a job in california, but then when lines of communication started to slow down they didn't want to pay for my relocation from canada. Not even 4 days after that fiasco, I found a place super close to home in Toronto making more then what I anticipated originally and I have a lot of responsibility + self-time management (which was one of my requirements). I show up to work to do some reading during the day [since everything is working constantly and is being monitored] and do maintenance on my servers at night or the weekends. Very layed back... although I think if I got a similar offer in cali, I'd probably jump on it... I'm getting sick and tired of winter every year in canada lol.

Did not see anyone say this, but realize IT jobs these days are heading to India, those people get paid like $20K USD. I work for a Forture 500 company and we have very few US based IT folks the one that are here are the higher end, and system architectures type folks. All of our day to day systems admin are now in India. More and more companies are out sourcing the IT services to places like India.

Yes some stuff is being outsourced but it is the lower end stuff. A company wants a good sysadmin to be on call and LOCAL. Texas job market is interesting. Depending on your skill set. If you are a windows person austin/dallas are the places to go. Dell is in Austin and so are a lot of other interesting companies. I wish my company was there... Austin is amazing.

Not really worried about the outsourcinf aspect. Most help desk positions are outsourced rather than sys admins, net admins and net engineers.

If you have needed skills and you willing to work contract you can do pretty well, but not as well as it was 5 yrs ago when people IT contractors where getting 100K plus. The contract salaries have come down and become very competitive in the last few years. This is partly due to the outsourcing to India. |

Free money, and more job security IMHO. It's nice to be your own boss and everything, but once you get a management gig...your more/less your own boss |

I think the IT market is cloudy at best. There are tons of unemployed people with great credentials. This especially applies to the Bay Area where you see tons of experienced people filling lower level jobs because the market is so saturated.
I do see VMWare going places though, just food for thought.

Typically in my experience jobs which are outsourced oversea's are done so when the project involved something not relating to national security... I dont think any sort of data center or support jobs overseas would be complaint w/ any govt regulations, let alone meet any of GSA's requirements/NIST compliant... But again I live in Metro DC which is the center of government contracts..Lockheed Martin, Northtrup Grumman, British Aerospace Engineering and many many others, first question they ask before you even get an interview is 'Are you a US Citizen' followed by 'are you clearable' for a Secret/Top Secret level clearance... Clearances=job security and more $$ |

I work for EDS, we have a 10 year contract w/ GSA to provide an Etravel application to the federal government. More/less we provide a 'travelocity/expedia' service to federal government employees within agencies to consolidate their travel, expenses etc

Out of school experience I have almost 4 years. I'm an Executive Support analyst, basically, I do IT support for the CEO and his direct reports. There's more entailed in that, but at the low level, that's what I do. I'm making 85K+, with your skills and 10 yrs experience, you should definitely be over 100K. Then again I work for a fortune 100 company that highly values IT. This is in IL btw.
