Ctek 4.3 did the job. Was able to start the car. https://www.amazon.com/CTEK-56-864-A.../dp/B006G14FK8 This also has a recond mode that reconds severely discharged batteries.

I used a vacuum connector to fix that vacuum pipe, with some silicone hose from Autozone. http://www.autozone.com/fittings-and...?checkfit=true

Wink (2) Gaskets and (2) O-Rings

I say replace it all. On my N-54 both the OFH Gasket and the oil by-pass thermostat housing gasket was leaking which also requires (2) green seals.

It is not an if but when will it fail.

Are you talking about this P/N 17222245358?

Didn't do it (I was looking at the OFH diagram http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=11_3971 and didn't come across this gasket), but it seems like something that can be easily since it's like the 1 place that was most easily accessible.

This gasket is on the Engine Oil cooler line. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...75#17222245358

Yes - exactly -- the 2 gaskets and 2 O-rings.

When I took mine apart - the 2 O-rings were damaged so I had to replace them with O-rings of the same size but not correct material until I got them from local BMW - so I suggest picking them up before you start.

I 1st replaced the OFHG only to realize that the 2nd gasket was also leaking.
.
All easy to remove and replace and something I will be looking at on my N55.

All parts came up to around ~$250 USD, and I already had most of the tools so I didn't have to buy anything except the Torx/Star Sockets and the T50,T60 torx bits (the T60 took a bit of shopping around).

Not bad on the price. Would you say this is something for expert Diy'ers, is this something someone with basic understanding (i.e., someone who can do their own brakes, oil, etc) can do?

Does it require taking the engine out?

Taking the engine out is not required. I would suggest removing the fan though. It's a pretty basic diy.

I recall you had a number of posts about buying tools; make sure your torx set has the correct bit size for the belt tensioner. My set didn't come with the correct bit so I had to buy a second set.

No it doesn't need taking the engine out. It's a pretty basic DIY like Donutz mentioned above. But definitely less convenient than doing brakes, with very little room to the things you want to do. Should have taken out the fan maybe.
