I was thinking the same thing last night at the gym, where I could watch people circle the lot twice waiting for a close space, so they don't work up a sweat before sidling up to the protein drink bar. Seemed especially ludicrous, but I should be grateful 'cause it made me feel like I was working out harder.

We call this the 'Minnesota thing' because during my time out there it was like a universal compulsion - no matter how many open lanes at the checkout, or how many open tables at the restaurant, they always came RIGHT NEXT TO YOU (usually with less personal space than you get on a Tokyo subway).

I had a friend who did this. I asked him why. Turns out, he didn't do it out of spite. He thought it was cool parking next to a nice car. He thought his car was nice too (newer car at the time, but not as "fancy") and he thought it was cool parking next to a fellow car enthusiast.

If you out-park, and I have the E90, I might park in a spot near you.

If you double-park in close, and I'm in the truck, I hope you have a can-opener or trunk-monkey to pull your car out.

I feel like this is the case more often than not.

The guy backed up. That's a dead giveaway. He probably is careful with his car, just like you are with yours. It's not because he drives a Chevy that all of a sudden, he takes less care of it than you do and he's just out to annoy you.

Haha. The F8x black grilles I bought came with a very bad looking M4 sticker badge. I replaced it with a M side badge without 4

I think the vast majority of these instances has a more innocent explanation than spite.

One is herd mentality. Many people don't want their car to stand out in the parking lot (perhaps out of fear of vandals or thieves). So they park where everyone else parks. Or, if you're the only car in the parking lot way out in the boonies, perhaps people might think that there's a reason that no one is parking close (perhaps restricted or reserved parking or even "that person must know something I don't"). Fact is, by following the lead of someone else, it reduces risk.

Second may be even more benign. Many businesses instruct their employees to park furthest from the entrance (to save the closest spots for the customers). Hence, by parking in a seemingly deserted spot, you're actually parking in the implied "employee parking area", and then employees will just park next to you anyways (see first item above).

hahaha - I wish I didn't delete the pic that I took one day at Target.

I ended up parking like 15 spots further out right next to a GTR. It was gone when I came out and I bet he was so pissed that out of so many parking spaces, I parked next to him.

Would probably be able to find it in a thread just like this on some GTR forum.

What would you guys do if you walked back out and saw a Pagani next to your car parked in the boonies? So it's just some car prejudice going on here if the car is inferior to yours? LOL.
