Underwater welding you can do only for a certain amount of years due to the water pressure affecting your organs.

Worked with a fella that was a former underwater welder, that got into automotive industry. He developed problems with his ears due to constant water pressure. But yes, the money is good. You just got to ask yourself how much is your health worth.

Speaking of underwater welding - My uncle is an Engineer for Southern Railway.

I was always fascinated with his tales of large catfish bumping him and the welders when they worked on train trusses in deep water.

Ha, I was originally going to school to be an under water welder or Aerospace before getting into manufacturing...,

Still would kind of like to get back into welding.

MY health is very important to me, but nowadays we do not even know what we eating. Most of the food is GMO, polution is in the air, etc. First of all I need to find a pro school around my area : )

Depending on your age, the US Navy can give you all the training you will need. I knew a welding instructor that did it all while in the Navy.

If you sign up for Underwater Welding, be careful not to click Underwater Basket Weaving.

I made that mistake and didn't realize my error until too late into the program.

I remember my first few classes and how I sat there thinking how the heavy is weaving similar to welding. I figured it was to get us to understand welding in some metaphorical way that would make sense at the end of the program.

yeah, but in my opinion it's not worth it to go to Navy cause you belong to army or is separate department ? Especially now when, so many US soldiers were send to middle Europe.

You are too late....90% of the people are replaced by robots !
Within 7-8 years ZERO people are required in the production ...

Here's my unsolicited advise. You will learn more and be better skilled by doing instead of studying. I went to a well known trade school that cost a LOT($30k for 9 months of tuition). That school put ME(not every student) in a position to get hired into BMW apprenticeship. That apprenticeship hires 8 techs/year and lasts 9 months. So 18 months of school, a degree and full factory certification. Still didn't have experience in the field. Now I was 40 and couldn't afford the time it would take to be experienced. 80% of tech school grads never work in their field of training.

The reason I suggested the Navy is you get paid while in training and you are immediately accumulating experience. Experience has WAY more value than training. If the armed service just isn't for you, get into an apprenticeship that puts you in the field. What you can DO is much more valuable than what you know.

30 is a good age to get experienced. Old enough to be serious and dedicated to your chosen trade, but young enough to have a long career. Remember time waits for no man. It is challenging to jump into something new, but once you have jumped it becomes much easier to see the opportunities that are available.

The Navy has its own department under the Department of Defense. Navy deployments are cake if you volunteer to go.

Military life ain't for everyone though, but it's good experience.

Yea - that place is massive. Not to mention the speciality manufacturing jobs in the surrounding area that support the plant.

This. I go there for work all the time. It's one of the few places that could possibly get me to move from SoCal.

I think this is true for 97% of the place. A former employer had a plant there which I visited on occasion to bless them with my magical powers. If it wasn't for the barbeque I would have said "set a match to the place." Waitaminit, that might have made the barbeque better...

I believe Greenville is the 2nd or 3rd largest city in South Carolina.

Then - you add the proximity to Asheville and mountains....very attractive place to live.
I googled Greenville. Adjusted my percentage down. Looks nice.

As for the BMW plant, you could live in the Greenville vicinity and have about a 30 minute commute each way. Tempting.

I understand what you mean. Navy is not definitely for me. I know experience is everything, but I need some basic welding the easiest to pass certificate just to start work on that field and go from there right ??

Contact your local community college and see what certification programs they have. Usually arc(stick) is offered and will get you set up for bridge and highway work. They will probably have an automotive welding as part of a body shop program but there won't be any certificate for welding. ICAR is the only automotive welding certification and holds very little value.

My buddy that welds at GE started with stick welding. Did MIG/MAG training with me and learned TIG in a street rod class while I was working at BMW. While at BMW I was structural welding certified for BMW. Also GRAV aluminium repair which is mostly rivet bonding but includes welding HSS w/Boron.

Oh yeah I was also in the Army when I was 19. I learned attention to detail and how to be a MAN in the service. Patriot Missile system.

COL in Spartanburg is insanely cheap....and a 20 minutes drive to the BMW plant.

Add the fact you have:
Major colleges (Clemson, USC, and local 'smaller' college athletic/community events)
Major NFL, NBA, and MLB sports franchises are a short drive away
Ocean is 3 hours drive
Mountains (National Forest and Blue Ridge parkway) are 30 minutes away
Great food and beer
You get all four seasons without any one being too harsh...
