Could BMW be leaning on McLaren to provide their next V8? It would make a good deal of sense since BMW has been absolutely mum on any possibility of adding a V8 to their own modular engine family. By outsourcing the development to McLaren, they get both the latest state of the art technology in high performance engines, and can avoid spreading their own resources over two different engine families (excepting the stalwart V12, but that may largely be in "maintenance mode" from here on out).

Certainly the lower end BMW versions of the engines would have output scaled down output to fit their M*50i products, but perhaps we'll see the next generation M6 with a 650hp+ 4.0L V8, even approaching 700hp in a competition package. Rumors do persist about a lighter 6 Series and M6 with less dependency on the 5 and 7 Series. This could all make for an exciting vehicle.
Not likely since a couple months ago there was a deal between jaguar and bmw, that states bmw sourcing a 4L V8 to the jaguar f type, all jaguar models.

I think I must have missed that one. Do you have a link?

In any case, it doesn't preclude a collaborative effort between BMW and McLaren to conceive the new engine. BMW would then still be able to build and supply the engines to Jaguar.

Sweet, maybe McLaren can share the secret sauce with BMW on how to make rod bearings and other essential motor components last longer than 50k miles!

You're kidding, right? McLaren has never, ever designed an engine with five-figure-mile longevity in mind. The only longevity it has ever been concerned about is with races. If anything, McLaren will learn a thing or two from BMW about that kind of engineering.

BMW needs to make an engine that has turbos that sounds like a Ferrari. High tone exhaust note.

"...Working with a number of partners including BMW Group..."

I wouldn't read into this whole article too much, it doesn't exactly specify the level of BMW involvement. I would think this won't be anything more than BMW supplying McLaren with engines and tailoring something already in the BMW parts bin to work in a McLaren chassis.

So long spark plugs!

Combine this with Freevalve.

No cams, timing belt or chain, no ignition system, no accessory belt. An engine could be half the size!
No. Turbulent jet ignition is still spark ignition, it is just much more tightly controlled so that a nice, smooth, homogenous wave of combustion is created.

http://www.mahle-powertrain.com/en/e...-jet-ignition/

Mazda's HCCI looks very interesting. And quite concerning. There is good reason no one has done this for a production vehicle yet. However, with direct injection and other recent technologies, it does seem plausible. Likely, there will be a learning curve to creating long-term reliability for this engine, but I love that they are pursuing it.

Won't happen but would be nice.
Out of those three, my guess is the hybrid turbo is least likely. But the only reason I can see the other two don't make the cut is if they have something better in mind that none of us have seen (or that they just can't make either option reliable enough, of course).

Extended Warranty companies are licking their chops at the sales of these cars with the new engine partnership.........

Side note..Toyota supplies the Lotus Exige with it's engine and it's a screamer.....

The interview with the BMW M CEO he said 'in the end, all cars will be electric, including M vehicles'. Why waste time and money on this now.

Because virtually no one wants an electric car now and this is with government helping pay for everyone of them built?

As for the partnership I am far more interested in a $100k-$180k car than a $400k very limited edition car I will never own or probably even see.

It was a joke. If McLaren has to rely on BMW engineering and quality especially, they're screwed.

Wasn't there a rumour a couple of years ago, or maybe months, that said McLaren and BMW were teaming up to build a BMW supercar by 2019? So could this be the start of that or is this just it?

Can't wait to see what goodness comes out of this. I echo Freevalve utilization too.
