I believe he has seen a car with a turbo failure, but I think it was a car using the proven to be compromised v2 with full catless exhaust and an intake. Probably using high torque settings and had a car that was wildly overboosting.

Thats the dilemma. You normally wouldn't total a car unless the repairs exceed about 80% of blue book value. But then again, these aren't insurance jobs in the first place. But you can't logically relate repair costs to car cost when you realize how much it would cost to buy all the parts in a car seperately as opposed to the cost of an entire car. They had various studies, and I don't remember the figures, but I would venture to say if you bought every part seperately for the 335i, it would probably be $150,000-$200,000. I'm sure some experts in the field can chime in on those figures. So the cars are too new to total, and too expensive to fix with a good conscious.

The sound in that video isn't from the wastegates, but I don't believe it's abnormal. Without a real reference theres no way to tell how loud it is, but turbos whining isn't exactly strange. Especially super high RPM turbos like ours.

Its definitely not normal and will be very noticeable even with your windows up. Many people with mods and turbo failures probably won't be disclosing it publicly.

AA blew their turbos by peaking 18psi for some time. What I miss in this discussion is that Alpina boosts up to 16 psi without any consequences on the turbos. Well, they use a lower compression ratio. However, this topic leaves a lot of room for speculations and we really don't know much about high boost turbo failures. We should be as objective and fair as possible here ... I am personally more on the conservative side by avoiding a possible problem in advance it occurs, so I understand the discussion very well. However, let's try to keep objective here.
Thanks, Eugen |

We have no way of telling if 11psi is too much, let alone 13psi, or 15psi... if the turbos can sustain 18psi to redline then anything below that maximum poential can be considered conservative. I used to run my stock eclipse turbo up to 19psi and it would fall to like 11psi by redline so this is all relative. What probably needs to be done is a measure of variance and oscillation, can you apply your engineering abilities and help the forum out?

??? Are you saying those sedan videos somehow relate to this coupe's turbo failure?

+1 It is of no benefit to the person with the "issue" to disclose the turbo failure.

Hotrod, post the DME printouts. I do not see the harm in presenting that information.

very impressive for sure. It seems that the coupe we are talking about though may have been boosting over 15 for sure. no evidence though, just speculation on that
