It doesnt matter all N54s are AWESOME!
Get RWD with a proper 6 speed trans and you'll have DUDEs drooling all over your dash, adn GIRLS will be mesmerized with you ability to multitask- "OMG operating 3 pedals, a steering wheel, and a shift lever, while saying sweet nothings". Doesnt get any better that this! (PS this car is a DICK magnet. Great if you like that, otherwise- stop wasting time at car meets, take a girl out for dinner!) Just make sure you have a about 10K stuffed in your mattress to take care of business when the following fail - Gaskets - dont ask which ones. Pick one, and it will leak at some point. - HPFP (probably already done) - LPFP (maybe if you're not E) - Radiator - Water Pump/Thermostat - and you must upload a pic of your car being towed. THOSE ARE THE RULES! - Turbos - Once over 100K - Clutch- if you/previous owner did not know how to drive a MT - Injectors (who knows which ones work. I have half index1 and half index 13. apparently they're BOTH "THE BEST!") - Plugs - do em every year if you're tuned! -coils- Every second year if you're tuned! - Dont forget wheel/tires. make it lots of tires! So there you have it. Pick any random year and enjoy it knowing what you're getting into.

He makes some good points. But, I wouldn't touch a pre LCI (06-08) personally. I don't find the design as a appealing, they're known to consistently have even more issues inside and out, and they're going to be higher mileage anyway. Having money set aside is great advice. It keeps you from having ultra paranoia every time you push the start button. Mine is an '09 - got it with 107k miles with receipts for water pump, thermostat, coils, plugs, oil changes, and oil filter housing gasket. IMHO, buy the car that makes you happy and has an owner that has this kind of paperwork. I spent 2 years trying to find a 09-10 RWD Manual with paperwork (in Minnesota people still think they NEED AWD, smh). These cars can be great when they're maintained - the ones that are not are the heart breakers. If no paperwork, I would walk away.
