Just had a thought. One thing I stupidly didn't do when I fitted my new CCV was to push a bit of wire into the oil drain on the side of the sump to make sure it was clear. It's about 20cm long with a shallow angle. The end is only a few mm across, I wonder if these can block? Might be an idea to check the one on the engine you're dismantling.
