Have another look champion, there are pipes there that connect the two mufflers with perforation, the muffler is still acting as a resonating chamber to kill drone.

So I had the genuine performance exhaust, I wanted something slightly louder and took it to an exhaust shop.

They looked and said its pretty much a straight through exhaust, so I said lets try a muffler delete.

This made it only slightly louder but introduced pretty bad drone which i wasnt happy with.

So I took it back and they welded in J Pipes which are meant to help reduce drone

I would say 80% of the drone is gone, but it still drones more than the Performance Exhaust.

I think the PE mod with the main pipe straight and the side pipes left alone would be the perfect exhaust for our cars.

I think you just saved me a trip from doing something foolish!

If you could do it all over again, what would you do? Precisely.

That is only true for 1 of the several pictures posted. True I missed the middle picture that maintained a bit of perforated section...

Point still stands that if you deleted all the perforation section of pipe (like seen in most of the pictures) you might as well of just straight pipe the exhaust. That would save you time, money, and weight. Otherwise, its a waste of time and makes 100% sense that it would be much louder and more drone than the PE lol

If I could start fresh, go back in time and have the cash if wasted, I would probably go to an exhaust shop and have a full custom exhaust including downpipe made up.

I know a guy who has had 3 BMW's N54's 135i, 1M etc, taken to this shop and he swears by them, and for the price I paid ($2,000 AUD) for the first BMW PE I had, I could have had a full custom exhaust made up.

These guys test for drone, and flow and rasp etc and put in certain mufflers and resonators to suite the specific job and engine and requirements of the owner.

Alternatively if I had a ton of money I would just buy the full IPE and call it a day.

I like the simplicity and flow of this but I think without muffler it would drone at 2kRPM like mine does now

What would be reasonable in terms of cost for the PE mod in areas close to a major city (e.g., DC)?

It shouldn't cost more than an hour or 2 of labor

Btw, here is a video of a proper PE mod.

I had the PE mod done to my car last weekend. True it shouldn't take more than 2 hours to complete. I paid $250 for it. Just bring that Youtube video to any muffler shop and get estimates. If they haven't done it before they'll assume its harder than it really is. Even **********s who made the Youtube video is charging people $500 for the PE mod.

My car is all stock other than FMIC. The sound is close to stock at idle, just very slightly louder. Cold start is about 20% louder but it calms down quickly. I like it though. The PPK burble is also a little louder. Its slightly more metallic sounding than the more soft burble. Sounds good without being too much. Hard for me to hear the difference at high RPM but I don't doubt it's a little louder outside too. Zero drone with my 6MT. This is a minor mod in my opinion. No one will notice but you.

The muffler shop only welded straight pipes to the outer pipes and left two inner perforated pipes alone. He re-used all packing. Safe bet.

Thanks for the input. I have an IS exhaust. I was planning to buy a used exhaust and try the pe mod, but it does not sound like it would make much difference in comparison with my IS exhaust.

I'm getting mine done today and considering messing with the inner perforated pipe too. I don't want a factory sound. I don't mind the rasp, I just don't want a crazy drone.

I bought a used PE exhaust from here a few weeks back and can say I'm more that happy, IMO it's a lot louder than stock especially with pops on downshifts. At cold idle louder and at warm idle just a hair louder, Car is stock except for tune and FMIC.

I looked at doing the mod also but was quoted more than what I paid for the PE mufflers :/

Makes sense. I wish someone had a picture of what the PE looks like internally.

Take a look at this pdf. Page 6 has a picture of an actual PE that was cut open. Not sure what the packing was like, though.

I'm heading to an exhaust shop after work today to get a quote for doing this.

I have the PE with downpipes. It is loud. Louder than I would want for a DD in my 30s. When I was in my 20s it would have been fine. It's not my daily so I don't mind it at all.

It will drone if it's straight piped... I would just do the PE mod the right way then use the golf tee mod for more sound.
