Also, I thought the disk/drum was going to come off and was going to inspect the state of things inside of it but instead I was greeted with a racing style nut in the middle. What's that all about?



you need to take the disc retaining screw/allen out..not the hub bolt.

It looked like it was all one piece. Are you sure it would come off? I wirebrushed it trying to see if there is a joint but could not see any.

As rasa said undo the hex head retaining screw on the disc hub, you may need to tap the hub with a rubber mallet to get it off. There are plenty of vids out there on how to change discs/rotors & pads.

As you can see from pic below the new disc & hub fit around the central nut

yup..and as said.if its a little stiff,give it a whack..
clean it all up after,,so next time its easier,,get a bit of copper grease in.

Hex retaining screw is right there on your pic, at about 10 'o' clock!

Also, the joint is visible on the disc around the spigot that the wheel locates on.

Just something to note, my E91 nearly failed MOT recently on a rear calliper hose being twisted. Tester said it was easily done on these cars, putting the caliper back on with the hose twisted(?). Can't say I've ever found that to be a thing on VW's in the past, it would be pretty obvious and careless, but thought it was worth mentioning.

Looks like this weekend I'll be removing the caliper and removing the twist in the hose.
