Question Some questions for Steve.Breen@Dinan. Any knowledgeable person chime in..

Lots of talk about Down Pipes making 26hp. On this forum...

1.) If I buy one of those, Catted one because I want to pass emissions, does that void my Dinan warranty?

2.) What is the possibility of damage from installing the DP mod?

3.) If the gains are so great, why does Dinan not offer them? Why does BMW not offer this? After all they have a performance exhaust... I'd go after market obviously $$$ but regardless, why Dinan is not in this market is interesting.

4.) What would be required if I installed this with an intake etc from Dinan?

every single piece of motor gear pretty much has to pass CARB or have a damn good reason to be EPA legal for street use.

besides why don't you just buy a m3 (bmw's point of view) instead of their family sedan/coupe. The m3 is the faster real drivers' car. you know thats how they feel.

So if you buy a Dinan program, it will erase any BMW updates and replace them with an earlier BMW version with Dinan’s changes on it. The reason BMW came out with a newer BCU and PCU was to deal with waste-gate rattle complaints. They’ve changed the duty cycle to the waste gate actuator. While this update is important because of customer complaints about the rattle, Dinan has not gone to this latest version yet because of the complaints about turbo lag. Having said that, we must address the rattle, so we are analyzing the BMW software update in detail and also the source of the rattle to determine if we want to incorporate some or all of BMW’s changes or come up with another fix on our own that addresses the rattle without inducing additional turbo lag. We don’t have a predicted time of release on our next update. So far we’ve made 8 updates to our own software. However, none of them incorporate the latest BCU/PCU version that you’re complaining about.

To those who are worried about taking their Dinan flashed cars in for service, we can’t guarantee that your dealership won’t accidentally erase your Dinan flash. It’s not supposed to be erased when serviced, but mistakes happen. If your software is erased, there won’t be any charge to have it reinstalled. Just take it back to the dealership.

i gotta say you guys are world class tuners. and a great guy to explain it.

So when they update us to V30/V29.2 we get all the benefits(I-Drive fix) without the lag. i am tempted to upgrade now

Well, you would have the benefits (i-drive fix) for the few minutes until you get the Dinan. Steve explains that they are using pre 29.2 as the base. Therefore when it is Dinan flashed, your V 29.2 or 30 is gone. No trace of it or any of the "improvements" that were built into it.

If I misread your post to mean when DINAN begins using 29.2+ we'll have the benefits of the BMW enhancements + performance, then yes...that's sort of correct, except it will be V3X.X and they will be beyond 29.2 or V30.X

Steve, thanks.

Steve, this post clears up a TON. Thank you.

If you are reading this, one customer service suggestion that would be fantastic would be if you could maintain an email distribution list of flash owners, and notify people after any major revisions or enhancements to the flash (like what will happen when you begin using BMW's fixed progman whenever they get around to fixing the lag). That way, people would know that they should make an appointment to get the newest Dinan flash that incorporates the enhancements made by BMW, and any tweaks you've made to the performance side of the code.

quick comment on Down pipes. Any modification from the CAT forward, including intake and engine parts, have to be tested and certified. Most go off California Air Resource Boards certification cause its well known as the most strict. Now with the Down Pipe specifically federal government doesn't allow tampering or replacing the stock cats before I believe 5 years 100k miles (I could be wrong). So its actually rather pointless to put a catted DP since its not the stock CAT and would be considered breaking federal emission laws. So unless your a tree hugging criminal dont bother with the catted DP. With a grain of salt most cops dont know the law to well (chuckle) so any cat to them makes you pass but when it comes to the smog check (legally imposed or registration imposed) most smog technicians will not pass an aftermarket cat if they want to keep their smog station legal.
