Swirlflap is electronically actuated.

What about any loss of power/torque from doing the swirl flaps?

Swirl flaps
This might sound stupid.....But why not just spot weld the screws on the swirl flaps so that they never come off? wouldn't that fix the whole swirl flap issue?

The problem with the swirl flap is the "flap" breaking and getting eaten by the engine. It's not a known issue with our m57 in the US but I've heard It was a issue with some earlier European spec m57s. So you just install blanks in place of the flap portion and disconnect the rod that that moves the flaps open/closed. Also sometimes they leak boost or stop working because of carbon buildup. Just gets rid of another possible failure point.

Anyone in California have issues with M57 swirl flaps post 2008? I talked to several All German mechanics in Newport Beach and they all said leave it alone, there is no issue.

140k miles on my all-stock (except for the running code and exhaust) drive-train. It still has the factory-installed belts.

Mechanical shyt breaks. Sometimes it's a total disaster for unlucky owners, like the Cummins KDP fiasco. Is there any data on just how many swirl flaps malfunctioned in a spectacular way, pointing to a reliability measure of any sort? Doubful, but I'm listening... What I have seen more than a few times tho, is people in message-boards and social media fixing imaginary problems because somebody said it was good idea.
Information has a tendency to spread quickly and widely these days, regardless of it's veracity. |

In some forum a guy in Finland saw his regenerations happen more without the flaps. They help idle conditions to reduce soot. If you don't have a dpf, you won't see a benefit to them.
