So, to have a 335i that's better than your RWD car you will have to buy a 335i xi with snow tires and it will be only marginally better at one thing than your current car and that's accelerating. That's it. But you'll have to buy snow tires in the end, anyway. C/N: just buy snow tires. |

Wranglers are extremely fun.

Not awd but a gti is a fantastic dd. I do e90 for fair weather weekends and the gti for dd duty.
Great mileage, fun to drive etc. etc. Runs great in snow, add snow tires for extra traction. GL! |

Jeeps
Although I'm biased because any Jeep is literally a mommy-mobile where I'm from. I never understood these Moms preferring utilitarian-esque vehicles. Land Rovers, Jeeps, FJs, G-Wagens. It's like LARPing that they do more than dropping off the kids and going to Whole Foods.

Keeping it in the BMW family, my favorite e92 secondary vehicle has been the i3. Very utilitarian and being at the opposite end of the spectrum has a great driving experience without being a soccer mom x3/5.
Looks weird and all that but it's way under appreciated as a second car. |

OP states he wants a winter vehicle with AWD....
Thread leads to suggestions about an E92 M3

Real Jeeps have an inline six engine and a manual transmission.

You can get a 99-04 V8 Grand Cherokee for like 5 grand that will last forever and tow plenty. Or get the inline 6 if you want it to go for 300k+ miles.
You're basically asking us what winter beater to buy. If you don't need the capability of an SUV and just want something with AWD, tell us. You can't really give us 2 parameters and expect to get good suggestions. |

I own a BMW 2012 335 XI MT and even though I have snow tires for the winter its not a great winter car. It rides to low and gets stuck in snow piles easily and rides to stiff for frost heaves. I would agree with others to get something different like a used Subaru, Toyota 4runner or any other beater with space and higher ground clearance and 4 wheel drive. Another car not mentioned are the Volkswagen Alltrack and Golf wagons. They are not an SUV and drive with a European flair and can be gotten with a manual and are pretty cheap.

I recommend a Volvo S60, the 2.5T is very common, good power, reliable and comes in AWD. The 2.4T T5 adds a bit more power, is as reliable, but a little more rare
Both are good values, and because it has good swedish steel it doesn't rust. My 850 is still mint, so was the S70 T5 I just sold. |
