I'll agree that this sounds great for the AT world, but there's still something about going through a manual gearbox. I just love it!
Who knows, maybe I'll learn to have the same amount of fun with the paddles.

You will! The paddles are great and it is even better when sitting in traffic and I don't have to clutch it ALL the time....

well i found some interesting info on the new DCT tranny.
also if Jason the moderator of the site, Please can find me the 335i ZF tranny FAW page, i know i seen it once but i cant find it now, thanks alot. Car and driver: "Transmissions also are unchanged on this side of the ocean, meaning the six-speed automatic remains. For Europe, BMW announces that the seven-speed double-clutch automated manual is available on the 335i coupe and convertible. All U.S. officials will say is it is not in the cards for the U.S. for 2009. Our 2009 coupe and convertible keep the same look, so there is hope that when these body styles make their styling changes, the new tranny is part of the enhancements—likely for 2010." also, well for the idrive junkies: "ike its bigger brothers, the 3-series will get the next-gen iDrive system when equipped with an optional navigation system. In Europe, it can pull routes from the internet as BMW plans the world premier of ConnectedDrive which offers internet use inside the vehicle (when stopped) as an option. The data would stream in via EDGE technology, similar to that used by Blackberries—but it is not available in the U.S" |

The DSG takes about 8 milliseconds to upshift[1][2]. In comparison, the sequential manual transmission (SMT) in the Enzo Ferrari takes 150 milliseconds to upshift |

I'm waiting for the smg tranny that shifts by itself but yet you still have a clutch and stick for the times that you want to shift yourself. That would be awesome!

does anyone know what the 335i's ZF AT 335i tranny is rated for 1 upshift speed?(80ms?) ZF states that its tranny can do 6th to 2nd downshifts in 100MS which would mean a upshift would occur in shorter time, putting it at or around 80MS being a guess.

There is still a theoretical advantage of brake boosting with a turbocharged torque converter equipped car. A DCT will still do a launch mode at the expense of burning up clutch plates. A steptronic will allow torque multiplication through the converter which will make for some great launches if you have traction.

130kb/s internet and an 80GB drive in a 2009/2010 car...sweeeet... Well at least they have it.
Like the tranny; sounds like it's not destined for the US until later; good news for the earlier E9x adopters; seems like things may pick up about the time we're due for an automotive refresh |

i don't know what you guys are smoking but a dual clutch automated manual is far superior to a traditional automatic in a multitude of ways.
i can agree that the dual clutch trans that is put into the 335 will probably not offer the many stages of shift settings such as the m3 - but the trans will still shift far faster than the zf box currently being used..its nature of the design... the amount of time that torque isn't being transferred is MUCH shorter.... if you are in 1st gear, 2nd gear is already engaged... all that has to happen for a shift to execute is for the clutches to swap.... and since one clutch lets out as the other lets in there is only a BRIEF moment - measured in milliseconds (generally under 50ms) - that torque is not being transferred. i owned a DSG MKV GTI - and now own a 6spd AT 335i - there is no comparison... the zf 6spd AT in the 335i is a good automatic - but its just not the same, not even close to the DSG - or the 7 speed dual clutch bmw will be introducing. if you seriously think a 7spd dual clutch won't offer much advantage over the current 6spd ZF AT - you really need to start researching the advantages such a gear box offers... you also need to remember that by design such a transmission is more efficient than even manual gearbox in some circumstance! (while always more efficient than a slushbox)! the dsg in the mkv is claimed to execute shifts in 8MS. |

The new 3 Series Sedan will be available at BMW centers in fall 2008. Until then, explore the International Press Kit. Note: the European models includes slight variations from those that will be available in the U.S. The U.S. press release is coming soon. * I guess we will find out soon enough what SLIGHT VARIATIONS mean Read the International Press Kit (0.5 MB PDF) |

All trannies have their benefits. 6MT shifts nicely directly to any gear you want while dsg doesn't guess your shifting plans. And at the limit or slightly beyond, clutch will be your savior when desperately trying to regain traction.

The BMWUSA site makes it sound like most of the changes are coming to the US this fall, with only slight variations from the international document.
I'm just saying we will have to wait for the US document to see what BMW means by slight variation to see what we get and what we won't. |

wow, i guess pretty soon the traditional manual transmission with 3 user operated pedals will become obsolete. why did i spend so much time learning how to execute heel/toe rev match downshifts when 'push button perfect downshifts every time' was just around the corner

the manual will always be more fun.... its just that most of todays youth dont take the time to learn how to drive a manual, and by the looks of this playstation generation and the lazyness of the americans, most kids will never learn.

I think the DCT is the bee's knees. It is fun to feel the surge of power upon shifts, but in practical fast-driving terms, a DCT will rock. The only big obstacle for me would be the $2500 price tag. I want DCT. I want EDC. I want big brakes. I want M LSD. I want lighter weight. I just can't justify forking over the $ for an M3. A no-holds-barred 335 tii w/ 355hp, M-sport interior/exterior and all these goodies for under 50k MSRP is my idea of a proper 3 series. It would get to 0-100 under 10 secs, and potentially be under 8 min on the 'ring. Plenty fast.
