Do you have any links regarding what you're saying?
If what you say is true, then this was the point I was making earlier.

I can't believe that for some people it is more important to have your engine bay match and look pretty instead of having a good quality product in there.

Here is the price on some of these filters from Amazon, from $11 to $22 each shipped. I will search for accounts of failure when I can.

hmm...I'm still just worried about the quality - there are plenty of products that are more expensive but the same quality....I'm searching as well but if you can find some instances of failure, It would help support the above mentioned statements

whoa now I'm gone for one day and I miss all the fun.

I've had my intake for a good 10k miles now and have not had one problem. Please don't bring out that this is a 15k motor story. I wouldn't put anything on my car that would endanger it

I will be optimistic here and wait for crimson. I've seen both intake cones and don't think there is much difference, if any, between them....however they're talking about flaking on the inside and not sure how that occurs...

I would strongly suggest anyone who cares about filter quality to check out this video. This is from S&B but shows the problems with some of the cheaper filters. There is a reason the real companies use K&N and S&B, and its really not much more money. $40 per filter compared to $20.

I have a couple questions though...

What is the filtration rate with these filters?
Who is the manufacturer?
What is the cleaning process?

IMO, we should be more concerned about what debris enters the engine instead of just thinking about the looks, sound, and power.
Mr. 5,

The manufacturer of the cones alone is "Spectre Performance", the filters came dry from Crimson92 however there is a cleaning kit available from the manufacturer website. Crimson92 we'll hook me up with that soon.

Can't comment on the quality of THESE filters, but +100 for avoiding cheapies in general.
A few cars ago, I had a cheapie filter on my intake. One night under WOT a piece flaked off and jammed in the BUTTERFLY VALVE OF MY THROTTLE BODY! The friggin valve wouldn't close at all! It was not amusing, being 16 and new to driving and having the car fly down the road and not even be able to brake enough to stop it. I threw it in neutral and it pegged off the rev limiter like a machine gun until I was able to pull over and kill the engine. It was around midnight in a rural area and no one was around but finally a cop saw me pulled over since he thought it was strange that I was on the side of the road looking under my hood. I started the car and showed him the problem (pegs the limiter again). Despite me being 16 and my car being annoyingly loud with a Borla, headers, and intake, he was super nice and helped me remove the intake and then used his flashlight to shine it in the TB. Sure enough, there was the little filter chunk, jammed in there, holding the plate wide open. We unwedged the sucker out from there and it was as good as new. Next day - that friggin filter went in the trash and I got a damn K&N (I also wrote the manufacturer thanking them for nearly killing me).
Sorry for the OT, but just wanted to reinforce that cheapie filters are not worth the risk.

Ouch sounds rough.

I have a similar story, with a k/n filter.

Truth is all of these filters can go bad at any time. Its your duty to check them periodically. Im not saying k/n or spectre are junk filters. But theres a certain level of caution you have to exercise on your part.

Wow, I've never heard of a K&N failing. Especially since they have the tight woven metal screen that would prevent much material from breaking off and flying into the motor.

Perhaps with something like a K&N it could even be the black rubber area that had little extra "tags" of material...hanging chads if you will, that could eventually come free and fly in there.

Oh, FYI, my cheapie filter was a foam unit, so it was a chunk of foam that caused it.

oh i am very weary of foam filters...too many horror stories.

The spectre filters have the same construction as k/n...meaning metal screen all around the filter

Keep me posted on the status of the heat shields. I made my intake a dual cone with K&N filters, and love it. I have been looking for a heat shield for them.

Filter failures come in different styles. They can fall apart quickly where you don't have time to prevent it. They can fall apart slowly where you may notice it if you pop the hood often. Say they never fail, the cheap filters let more dirt and dust in the engine/turbo system which wears it out more quickly over time.

If you value your vendor reputation and status I would stop selling $11 Chinese filters with $3 adapters for $100. At least upgrade to one of the less expensive K&N filters for $32 each on Amazon. You will still make $40 per "intake" sale. If one of these cheap filters falls apart you and your company will be liable to repair the engine damage.

Nothing like a good old fashioned whisper campaign. Rather than linking to a manufacturer's slick video, how about some specifics about this particular product failing.
