Not having a manual Is like having your balls removed and it would be very sad but I'm sure life would go on. I refuse to own it automatic. When I finally do it will be an electric car. People might have analogies about this and that but realistically the internal combustion engine was meant to have a manual.

If you're SO can't drive a manual just buy her an automatic and keep the manuals for yourself. Or is the analogies go get with the modern times and get an electric car. It's just a matter of time till everything is electric. Then autonomous.

2018 BMW M2  [8.01]
My current M2 is my first M car without a manual. Seattle traffic has gotten so bad that I haven’t missed the 6 speed.

And when the DCT is faster and gets better mileage than a 6 speed, there is no longer an argument for getting a 6 speed. A year and a half in, I am still enjoying my DCT.

I have four vehicles in the driveway with manual transmissions, and two with one-speed direct drive motors. As a side benefit, I have no worries about kids borrowing one for a joy ride.....

Why not have both?

Have your cake and eat it too. Sold my 6MT E46 M3 recently, but I plan to add a manual some else to the stable again soon.

That's a great car ownership technique that I would like to learn. How do you get into predicting the expect prices of the cars and all that? Just a gamble based on looking at prices?

Interesting concept for this thread. But I suppose like women, I don't let go of what I enjoy. That goes for women, cars, and transmissions. My ex's (both women and cars) are that way for a reason. I have zero regrets on what I've cast aside over the years.

Pretty much boils down to, buy low sell high.
There is obviously more to it, like you'd want to buy cars at the bottom of their depreciation curve and knowing the market and demand for certain cars. If you are handy you can buy cars that need work and still make a profit. Obviously you need to understand there is some risk and some stuff you need to do. Lots of strategies out there you can research.

The joy of driving isn't all about what's faster - you can only drive so fast on public roads before getting arrested. If better mileage and being fast is all you want and cared for, then a single gear electric car is way faster than what that DCT can give you, but none of us here are driving those, are we?

Sure, there's enjoyment in a DCT, it's just a different experience, compared to a 3 pedals.

EV's are surprisingly not fast once they're doing 40-50mph. It will be interesting to see how the Taycan deals with this as I assume it's the first one that will see significant Autobahn usage.

DCTs are also much faster on the track. And I don’t have to listen to my wife complaining about how difficult it is to drive a manual.

I think if you can get one manual car and one automatic you are covered. If not it is a secondary issue to your loved one. Life is full of compromises and that is a small one. I do wish there was a true manual with a clutch you could switch to full automatic mode.

lots of interesting replies, but not one hits precisely on the question I posed:

anyone go from manual to DCT or another good manumatic, then miss manual, go back to manual to then say "what was I thinking, I should have stayed broken up with manual"?

Get a manual. I've been driving manuals for 20+ years. For a brief 1.5 year time I had an Audi with a DSG and was literally getting sleepy driving it. So boring. Have 0 interest in ever leaving manuals again!

The paddles are fun for like 2 weeks. After that it's just pure boredom. Manuals are never boring. Even a boring car with a manual is more fun than an exciting car with a dull automatic.
