I don't know if you guys have seen this, but Hojin is stopping in San Diego on Oct 3 to unload Porsches and VWs:
http://www.sdmis.org/schedule/ And, it is stopping in Long Beach, too, to unload Mercedes. So, it will be stopping in all three SoCal ports. It is still on the schedule for PH on Oct 5. http://www.portofhueneme.org/documen...0922162359.pdf |

Schedule for the canal has slipped a day:
M/V Hojin 2000/26/Sep Not booked # 12 AM28th (1st date is arrival, 2nd is transit) Aislive lists ETA for the canal as the 27th. Maybe the guys in Traviata will pass us up? Depending on arrival & departure to SD, I can walk to the bay with my 400mm lens and try to snap some shots. |

http://www.sdmis.org/view/24thcam.phtml Sometimes the ship sits directly in view of the web cam and sometimes it is out of view to the right, but you can see the parking lot where they park the cars as they come off the ship. Actually, today I can see the camera is switching angles automatically. Sometimes it does that and sometimes it is focused on one spot. Also, I will have to dig around for the link, but there is a great web cam of the entire SD bay (it is mounted on a high-rise building), and with the web cam you can see the entrance of the bay all the way down to where they dock these ships. You can actually change the views of the camera online yourself and follow one of these ships in and out of the bay by moving the camera view up and down the bay. This high-tech stuff is great! |

These dates oftentimes change around by a day or so, probably depending on whether in the Atlantic. They usually transit before the transit date listed, though. sdslayer needs to keep an eye on radar, as she could appear on the Atlantic side any day now. Normally, they arrive in the Atlantic anchorage and park in the bay overnight, then they will transit early that next morning. But, of course, that is not always the case. It depends on the traffic in the PanCanal. I have seen ships sit for four or five days in Atlantic Anchorage because something in the canal is broken, or they are doing maintenance, and they are limiting passages. That is rare, though. sdslayer will be extremely helpful as he can see radar and know exactly where Hojin is located throughout the whole PanCanal region.
These ships are so huge that PanCanal pilots board the ship the morning of transit and guide the ship through all 50 miles of the canal. They like to do this in daylight, because the ships take up every inch of lock space and they don't want to damage the ship or locks, so they start very early in the morning, and hopefully, finish before dark. Sometimes the journey gets delayed as they are making the passage and they do end up coming out the Pacific side in the dark. |
