Yes fuel has a big effect on timing corrections.

It's usually worn plugs/coils, low octane and/or Intercooler heatsoaking High IAT's that cause timing corrections.
Hmmm... I guess I’ll get a different coil brand next time. I bought Bosch because I was only replacing one, but then later ended up replacing the rest.

Haven’t felt any difference using different fuel or with the octane booster, but also haven’t had a chance to do another log. I just saw my intercooler arrived (!), but unfortunately I won’t be home until late next week to install it.

I was reading that spark plug gap should be decreased on tuned N54s—should I replace the plugs and do this? It seems like .022 is the consensus. I’m hoping the intercooler and decreasing plug gap might go a long way toward solving these issues.

I’ve read a bit about it but never seriously considered it. I rarely do performance events with my cars (maybe a couple autocross was a year) and typically it doesn’t get too hot where I live. I also need to limit how much I spend on this car considering the mileage, and I’d rather look for simple solutions (that overlap with maintenance) tbh, considering this is my daily/college car/ski car! I’m more than happy with the power it has (had) on the stage one tune, so just need to make it run properly and reliably there

Thanks for all the help everyone!

There is a significant difference between 91oct, 93oct etc and even bigger difference when using E85

Sorry I don't know about octane boosters and how effective they are.

Stock Bosch plugs are good for about 400bhp from what I read. They will be able to handle Stage 1/1+ easily.

Since you had plugs changed 9k miles ago, I would replace them with Bosch plugs, if your coils fail, replace them with Delphi or better Eldor ones

1 step colder plugs are recommended for FBO,

If you can, go with MHD, I wouldn't bother with Cobb tunes

I wouldn’t worry about any of this until you test your intercooler. Test one variable at a time.
I am fbo stage 2+ . I have always used Bosch coil packs and Bosch plugs. As stated on the Burger Motorsports website, the Bosch 3 prong plugs are rated up To 475whp. I like them because no need to gap. I also find the ngk gap changes as the plugs wear.
When my coils start to misfire I may try the elder ones just because I have heard good things.
Good luck! Hopefully the intercooler works out for ya.

Yes, agreed, not saying he's got to do everything at once.

I replaced my stock Bosch coils with Eldor ones and new Bosch plugs, never had any issues with them since.

Good to hear Bosch plugs can handle FBO.

New log w/ new intercooler

Hi All,

I ended up ordering an intercooler from eBay. While I know the ARM product has more support behind it, I saw this one piece that got pretty good reviews, and I wanted to spend as little as possible (although sometimes replacing cheap parts means spending more).

Anyway, the intercooler was totally plug-and-play in terms of fitment, and it felt like a totally new car. I can't believe how much power it was missing.

I did a new log, and nearly all of the timing corrections are gone (only cyl1 and cyl3 reached -3.75° close to redline, but I also forgot to turn off TC again...). The intake air temps are so much better--they even dropped as the car began moving, and barely rose at all through the pull to redline. Anyway, very happy with the IC so far, and for someone who is probably only doing light mods I think it might be capable enough. I have not yet put it on stage 1+ map (for an upgraded IC).

Here's the new log: https://datazap.me/u/highmile335/200...14-15-16-17-20

Thats good, you need to go Stage 1+ to really get the benefit of the FMIC, upgrade. You'll really feel the low down torque improvement,

Link to the intercooler you using by the way?

I just filled it up with Shell 93, so I'll re-flash it to the 1+ tune and see what happens!

Here is the link to the IC: https://www.ebay.com/itm/143336160678

It ended up being $238 (shipped), so could be a good solution for those on a budget.

Awesome glad it worked out for ya. I was on stage 1+ for a long time before i got my down pipes. You will be surprised with the difference for sure.

Do you replace those rubber seals when you installed? 1 green (hot side) 1 black (cold side). I find they dont last that long before they leak.

I did not replace those seals--had I thought about it in advance I would have ordered them. I was just too excited to install the new IC. Luckily they are pretty easy to replace, if they start to leak soon. Thanks for the heads up!

Thanks everyone! 335i feels awesome on the 1+ tune, but unfortunately now overwhelms my Ventus RS4s on 328i wheels in 1st gear (or maybe fortunately )

600nm will do that, lol. Much more fun personally

You could reduce wheelspin in 1st and even 2nd if necessary by using boost by gear or just get better tyres.

The tires I have are very sticky--they're 200 tread wear extreme performance summer tires. But they are 225s in the rear, so I'm sure they would hook up better if I had the OEM sport package wheels. Still got 13th/69 in the last autocross I did with them!
