Just hit 114,000 miles with my Index 1’s in 5 cyl. Had to replace cyl 1 with an Index 12 around 5k miles or so ago.

This does not fall into the key preventative maintenance items for BMW, like replacing serpentine belt, the "mickey mouse" flange, coolant hoses and so on that you should replace before they fail. I would see how the car runs with the injectors as-is. If they are rough, make sure its not something else, and perhaps run a couple cans of injector cleaner through your system first. If they are still on the fritz, then look at sending them off for cleaning. injectorrx.com is not particularly expensive, but try the cheaper alternatives first.

Regarding coding the injectors to your ECU, their calibration number is fixed. Cleaning them should ensure that their flow rate returns to what was measured in the factory - that measurement is encoded in a series of numbers printed on the side of the injector. That is the code you will need to input into a software package like INPA, or (in my case) Pro Tools. In both cases you will need a bluetooth or cable connector plugged into your OBDII port. You can usually find INPA on the internet for free, but its not the most use friendly, and it requires a PC - it is by far the most comprehensive diagnostic tool for your BMW, though. Pro Tools is an "app" can be run on any Android tablet or phone, but its about $75 for the diagnostic package that includes injector and battery coding feature. I have it loaded onto an old tablet that I keep in my car.

Here is a very good video on how to replace and code BMW injectors with INPA. There are similar ones for Pro Tool if you search Youtube.
Thanks yeah I bought an mhd dongle to scan the car some before I tear it down for the swap. I haven't driven it beyond idle and revs so no load. I had a misfire on 6. Could be plug or coil or injector or any number of things as the car was sitting in the copart lot for months with a dead battery after a pretty big wreck. I was just curious as I have enough time that I could send them out if the service is legit. I'm not pressed to get back up and running in a hurry, just one of those "while you're in there" kind of things. I'll have protools to code and likely inpa or recruiting a higher level coder to help with my swap.

They're like $1800 now on FCP!

That is kind of ridiculous. I paid $1200 for them a couple of years ago. I wonder if they would refund me the 1800 if I had to get another set using their lifetime warranty...

I don't want to necessarily dissuade you from having the injectors properly cleaned. If you have the time, 6 injectors will cost you $150, plus $10 shipping. Its really not a lot of money for peace of mind.

Is injector cleaning a viable substitute for old injectors?

I mean if you have older index 10 or less injectors, is it worth getting them professionally cleaned as opposed to buying a set of new Index 12 injectors?

You don't get any money back. You buy the new set for $1800, then replace your old ones, then send them back, then they refund you on that $1800 you just spent on the new set.

Index 1's are decent injectors, even after many years. $150 to get them cleaned seems like not a bad choice when the alternative is to spend TEN times that amount on remanufactured 12s. At this point in the price rise of 12s, I would probably even go for used 9s, 10s or 11s which are MUCH more reasonably priced.

I would never advise someone to buy a used index 9. They are absolute junk. Unfortunately, I have personally confirmed this too many times

Bought my car with 9s. All were working fine when I bought it, 3 months later they had all completely failed lmao

Sounds like they lasted longer than my 7s, started having big issues after a month and a half. Conveniently just past the BMW dealer's little "warranty" period

The channel you linked has info on their service, but the one video I watched only shows solenoid style injectors. I was under the impression that piezo-electric injectors like ours could not be cleaned or serviced like others. If that's all it took you'd think there wouldn't be the issues and multiple revisions we've had.

Still kicking with my index 01's on all six cylinders, but if cleaning and servicing is viable and beneficial I also don't see why I wouldn't pull them and ship them in for the service.

For those commenting on index-9s - Yes: in retrospect I should have modified my post above to encourage folks to replace with 10/11/12s if possible. 9s are probably the least reliable of all the injectors for the E9X, BUT I don't want to make a sweeping statement that they are all junk. I am running with one of them in #6 position and have had zero problems. When one of my original index-1s died, I did not want to replace all of them with 11/12s because of the insane cost of those versions. At the time, all I could find used were the 9s, so I was comfortable rolling the bones and got three used and pressure cleaned 9s for $105. The way I see it, at that price they are almost disposable, and swapping one out takes me maybe 25 minutes. So for my use case scenario, they were an acceptable choice.

Thank you for your post. It got me wondering, so I called injectorrx.com in Houston this afternoon to clarify the service they offer. Turns out, their $25 service does not include piezoelectric BMW injectors. For these, they charge $50/injector, but that includes disassembling the injector and refurbishing/cleaning it. I actually appreciate this since it seems like a more comprehensive solution that just running chemicals through to clear out clogs. Sorry for any confusion caused by my original post on this. If anyone decides to use their service, I encourage you to call them and confirm for yourselves what they offer.

I don't know enough about the engineering of the piezoelectric BMW injectors to know why it took BMW versions 1 through 12 to get it right, but they are definitely refurbishable. FCPeuro.com sells refurbished 12s, but they are not a whole lot less expensive that brand new ones.

I talked to my Indy a while back as he worked on the n54 project and many others, he said the reason that they leak is that they tried to cut costs on later revisions (7-9) by casting two pieces for the injector and welding them together because one piece is more complex to cast. After many heat cycles, the welds can crack and fuel will leak internally down to the tips. The early (index 1) and late (11, 12) ones were cast as one piece so they should not crack and leak nearly as often. Mind you it was about 2 years ago I talked to him so this is generally correct but the details might be a bit misremembered

Each index is a revision of a previous part? So if the first ones worked so well why did they need to revise it 12 times to get it right again?

Complete guess, cost to manufacture possibly?

It's weird because you rarely hear of index 3-5. I think a lot of it was experimenting with different casting methods trying to figure out something cost-effective and reasonably reliable. Remember they were rushed with this motor because they had to compete with the likes of the VQ35. I'd bet they weren't totally done squaring everything away and were very quickly trying to find cheaper, reliable injectors due to pressure from accounting.

I have index 1 injectors.
Engine has 124k km on it.
E85 use for 7 years.
95% track use only the past 5 years.
Did 10.7 1/4 on them last wknd.

The price of new injectors is so high its really worth looking at getting an aftermarket ecu and removing direct injection. Well thats my plan when index 1 dont work.

122,000 miles with the original injectors in my 2006 35i with no injector related issues....so far

Have owned the 35i for nine years & have done 70,000 miles during that time, have only ever used Shell V Power, maybe that's helped with keeping the injectors in good order.

i have index 11 or 12 ... forgot which.

last year my car sat for a while and developed a rough start. I ran a bottle of techron through an empty tank. Seemed to work since then

YMMV
