Remember, the MSRP on these cars was north of 50K - parts / labor is still reflective of this. If you want to learn how to work on a car, try an E90 325i…

I’m also 24, so I’m not coming from the perspective of a “kids these days” viewpoint.
I'm 30, back in high school I had a lifted Jeep Cherokee XJ. Still had enough power to go fast, and got terrible mpg with the big tires. That was a vehicle that was cheap and easy to fix, and I still could barely afford it.

My advice is if you want something more reliable, get a Corolla, Camry, Civic, Etc. If you still want something German, get a VW Jetta 2.5L or 1.8T with a manual trans. Still a decently fun car, but a lot less maintenance hungry. My sister's Jetta has been a tank, it drives pretty well, and it gets 37 mpg highway.

BMWs require more maintenance and care than what the average owner is willing to put up with. For example, a Toyota owner would skip over the transmission fluid at 60k (manufactures interval to change it) and probably never change it. The car most likely will run fine But, If you skip out on normal maintenance items such as transmissions fluid changes, etc on a BMW It'll come bit you in your ass later down the road.

Take care of the car. Meaning oil changes on time, don't neglect maintenance items, and if there is an issue, dont wait until it gets worse fix it asap.

If I was a high schooler, I'd avoid a 335 and stick with a 330, 328, or even a Toyota Camry.
The only time a high school student drives a Camry is of his gives it to him when she gets a new Camry.

Kid, buy a Civic and rice it out.
Civic is the way to go. DONT GET AUTO. IF YOU WANNA KEEP IT LONG AUTO WILL BLOW LOL. Get it in STANDARD transmission. They make one of the best in the Business. Very distinct feel and super sporty for the money. People say its almost Porsche like.

DONT GET A JETTA. Unless you go to raves or sell E. JK. I just rather you get a civic or civic si for that money. Even a Honda accord manual. The older ones come with f22 engines and F23 engines. Vtec on the intake side only. Then the generation after that had K20 and K24 engines. Very potent and sounds awesome. I would highly recommend a RSX if you could also.

I never understood the draw to 4Runners. Maybe because I've owned Jeeps my whole life? They look cool, but cost a ton more to modify and lift them since they have IFS, have interiors that look like they are from the 1990s, and where I live the frames rot out in a solid 5 years. A friend had a 2008 Tacoma and I hated working on that thing. It was a rusty mess and just seemed poorly put together. The drivetrain didn't have any issues to be fair, but the rest of it just seemed cheap.

They arnt that poorly made together. Theres a reason why some countries use those as militia vehicles and Taliban as well as Isis still mount guns on them and battle each other. Maybe even with a round in the block or differential LOL. Topgear also tried to kill a toyota truck and even tho its shady assss brit television, they did try fcking it up and it still started. Jeeps are great to cuz WW2 you had like generals Patton or Mc Douglas riding it into combat.

So you're suggesting an S2000 or a 2JZ supra right???
Dude S2000 are so expensive now. I have friends that have them since back then and they can actually resell their high mileage cars for more than they got it for. SC300 and 400 are worth it but the 400 has computer ecu issues sometimes. Both very fast but I think a toyota celica or even a corolla xrs handles far more better than them. The SCs are just good cruisers with good power for the highway. The 2jzge one is smooth cuz that inline 6 upfront and sounds very nice paired with a exhaust.

Lol I hate overlanders. I don't do any of that crap. I've got the trd supercharger, stock height, but some other mods. It's the most reliable car I've ever owned and I get more compliments on it than my e90 20 times over.

A 335i would be a big mistake - way too much expensive, complicated stuff that can go wrong or is probably already wrong for someone with no previous mechanical experience and not a lot of disposable income that can be thrown into it. Maybe something like it one day, but not yet.

Honda Civic/Civic SI or Mazda 3 would make more sense. These are cars you can work on and learn on and can provide some driving enjoyment. Not sure what kind of funds you have for purchase, but a Subaru BRZ/Toyota 86 might be an option as well - handles great, sporty feel, engine won't get you in trouble. Maybe a 2nd gen Hyundai Veloster (not the turbo). Maybe a 6 cylinder Mustang, although I don't know much about the maintenance/reliability of those.

I'll pay you to go on the 4runner forum and troll people LOL.

I can't stand that crowd, BUT I adore my 4runner and I've owned a few before this. One of the best cars money can buy imo.

Who is paying for this car? How much will insurance be for this car? Are you prepared for $2k maintenance bills if you cannot preform the work yourself?

328 would be better but its still a bit expensive to maintain , the parts cost more and it s not the easiest to work on... A lot of stuff is just over engineer , like replacing the battery requires you to code them.

I would steer to a civic Si , if you want a little more power or easier to tune WRX, GTI .

Then again , all these cars are not "cheap to maintain", maybe cheaper than a BMW

Way back when I wanted a WRX I browsed their forums and saw that engine replacements were basically a common thing and went with something else at the time.

Fast forward to a few years ago and a friend's younger sister bought a brand new WRX in 2016. I drove it and it was quick, but the interior and everything else felt so cheap for how much the car was. Even when brand new it felt like a cheap tin can with a big turbo.

Mitsubishi Evos are more reliable. They still feel cheap inside obviously coming from a e90. But for sure you can do oil changes at 12,000 miles and be fine with. My friend got his brand new. Been 4 years and 38000 miles. 3 oil changes and 4 sets of tires. THATS IT LOLOLOL. That evoX also gets driven HARDDD
