I am still trying to decide whether I should buy winter tires or not. There is not that much snow in York PA that I might be good with the stock all weather 17's. Just work from home on those most snowy days...

Meh, you're from Iceland/Greenland/Denmark/Finland/Norway/Switzerland/one of those European cold places eh?

Shouldn't be tough for you if you learned how to drive well in the snow back at home. But still summer tires will not work well at all as I have learned despite any snow driving experience. Get a set of Bridgestone Blizzak's or Nokian Hakkapeliitta on 17's.

Haha Pat, I find the snow today funny considering the discussion I had at your house yesterday.

I got my all seasons on my 525i and it looks like the E90 might go into the garage, under covers, and on a batt. charge holder soon.

Haha I know, I can't believe it. Lucky for your car, I wish I had that option. Good thing all the snow and slush was gone by the time I went home so the drive wasn't a problem. Switching over to my winters tomorrow. As ugly as they'll look, at least my gas mileage will go up.

Yeah I am from Finland so I know how to drive in the snow. The problem is that I have always had winter tires in Finland and I have never had a rear wheel drive before. On the other hand, never had good traction control either, always driving old shitty cars without any kind of traction control.

The stock 17's are all weather tires, not pure summer tires. But I don't know. I am afraid that buying Blizzaks and driving them mostly on dry asphalt will ruin them in one winter.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta is a Finnish brand, their factory is 15 miles from my house in Finland

I would get the winter rim/tire set up if I were you. Especially since you'll need it in Europe since they're required. Also you don't have to worry about them wearing down on the dry pavement, I've even delayed changing mine a month or so in the spring and even with warm weather they didn't wear down much. After two winters they still have a lot of meat left on them, I'd say I'll probably be able to use them for 2 or 3 more winters at least. However I went with dunlop's wintersports instead of blizzaks, since I got an insane deal on them from the tire rack, but have been very happy with the performance.

Ahhh I see...whatever a Nokia is, Finish people must love it. (I recently found out Nokia is Finnish when a friend got a job at Nokia in Espoo and now I learn of Nokian)

From my experience, winter tires are a lot better then all seasons (especially the Hakka Q's which are amazing). I have been in situation where the all seasons cannot get my out, despite of any driving skills. Such a situation has never occurred for me with snow tires. As for wearing them out, I don't like the feel they have on dry road so I usually swap em out as soon as the warm season starts.

As for 328i's suggestion of needing the two sets in Europe, he is right, but I doubt you are going to bring your car/wheels back with you to Finland if you ever decide to go back, eh?
