....just something to think about.
Regardless of how you route the belt IT WILL NOT BE any closer or further away from the subframe.

So there's no advantage to any particular routing method?

I would think there has to be some advantage.......I think it gets the belt up farther from the steering rack??

Correct. None.

Steering rack? I suggest you study the front end.

Power steering pulley and subframe is the ONLY point of possible contact and NO matter how you route the belt IT HAS to go around the power steering pulley.

How often should the belts and idlers/pulleys be changed?

Not sure if it's worth putting that crank seal plate in now...

Long, skinny needle nose pliers. You need to find the metal part of the seal and pull at it.

Hey I got my seal out now and everything looks okay in the engine. I cleaned all the belt out and put new oil pump gear with locking bolt I have a lot to order and don't have the $$$ all at once. so I'm going to hopefully start back up next week and I bought metal power steering pulley, crank seal plate, I hope this prevents this ever happening again

That won’t help you. No way you can pull it out with long skinny needles nose pliers. Like 0 chance. Only option when seal is severely damaged and the tool can’t grip is to push it inside, cut it in half and get it out.

Did you take the valve cover off & clean up the top too?

The crank seal plate will prevent the belt from getting sucked up.

The only to prevent losing the belt off the pulleys is to update your engine mounts to 335is or poly 60/80a.

Having the aluminum PS Pulley means the belt probably won't shred when the pulley hits the subframe, as a result of the worn out engine mounts. The pulley will just dent & probably throw the belt off.

The belt shreds because the plastic pulley chips from hitting the subframe and creates a sharp edge; thus, shredding the belt.

I’m going through this right now. What other thing should be replaced “while I’m in there”?
Oil pan gasket and bolts, front main seal, valve cover gaskets, oil change. It’s an n55 manual transmission. TIA

On an N55, i'd probably do rod bearings while down there. This seems to be a rather controversial decision on this forum though.
