more than likely if these are catless DP's we'll need some type of 02 sims, correct? I have yet to see a catless DP for any car that didnt require some sort of 02 sim to prevent a error from being thrown...

This won't be a problem. If you have a Procede Shiv has provided a nice DIY to that will cost a few bucks and a run to the local radio shack to put together. If you have no tune or another tune you can always buy an O2 sim from the many vendors that offer one, but even then you could still follow the DIY and get it done for a few bucks.

On the emissions, well... I have no emission testing where I live so I'm golden, but if you have a stock exhaust and are thinking about putting catless dp's in you should be ok with the sniff test.

In our area (Virginia) they dont do a sniff test, they actually use the OBDII connection in the car to 'test' for emissions. The old sniffer test is done on cars pre 200x??

Yes, you will need sims.

So was it a pain to remove them? Did you have to lift the motor?

Yeah, I'd like to know more about the specifics of 335XI downpipes too. I may be in the market for some in the near future but I'd like to do all my own installs and would rather not tear the whole car apart to wrench them on.

thanks

If you really want cats, then just buy the catless version and put cats in your midpipes. If you have the stock exhaust still then you don't have to worry just buy the catless since the stock pipes still have the cats in the midpipes.

We did not lift the motor. We did however have to remove the passenger side axle and axle bearing cage.

Did you need to drain any gear oil when removing the bearing cage? I thought about going that route but didn't want to get into draining/filling any oil.

If you don't care about reusing the cats, the stock downpipes can be cut in half for easy removal. The catless pipes will go in with ease, as they are smaller than the catted stockers. Note, it will involve some clever maneuvering to get them in.

I'm thinking about going this route. I don't care to keep the stock pipes and if I did ever sell the car I'm not going to go through the hassle to remove them either.

Nate, didn't you and jpsimon loosen a motor mount and jack the motor up a tad.

The downpipes will not come out or go in without removing axle, as far as I can tell. You lose a few oz. of gear oil when you remove the bearing cage, not a big deal at all.

EDIT: Are the pipes tapered right at the big bend? I thought the 335i pipes tapered right at the flange.

we removed the motor mount and then reinstalled it to get the new pipes in. if you have more questions feel free to pm me.

Edit: yes we also jacked up the motor a bit, but i'm not sure if that was necessary once the motor mount was removed.

2nd Edit: if i had known only a few oz of fluid would spill out i would have removed the axle, but at the time i was unsure and didn't want to deal with the axle removal. buying a sawzall was a much easier and faster solution for us.

Nate

Also, AR i forgot to mention...those pipes look beautiful, if they were available 6 months ago i would have had JP go that route!
