I went with the Castrol at my local BMW dealer. I'd rather not mess with what's recommended by BMW

So:

Oil from the dealer
Castrol 0W-30
Mobil 1 0W-40

These carry BMW LL-01 approval. There are some others, but they are hard to find.

Be wary of boutique oils that are “recommended for”; this is not same as “approved”. The approval process involves considerable, and expensive, testing.

Note that Mobil 1 5W-30 and Castrol 5W-30 are not approved.

yea...walmart has M1 European 0-40
they're low in stock (national) which was cause by the storm, but not sure when the shortage will end
I was at Walmart last week and they had a sign about the shortage/storm but was lucky that there were still 8 quarts left on the shelf
it was $6.XX per quart

you could, or could switch to a full synthetic oil. Personally, I think mobil 1 is fine for most applications.

And just what is “synthetic” these days? Oh how I hate lawyers and marketing people.

IMO the only rational criteria we have are the European approvals. These all require serious testing, and both Mobil 1 0W-40 and Castrol 0W-30 have an impressive list. How they achieve that matters little to me.

Not trying to bring up old threads here, but i drive on the Autobahn and my car usually see's anywhere from 100-130 MPH on a daily basis, what oil should i be running. Just a hint for those who don't know the prices here in Germany. 1 Liter (Not a Quart) of oil is about 20 Euros, which is about 25 or so dollars.

You are probably not going to get good information here since the board is dominated by North Americans. Oil companies tailor their oils to the market, and what appears to be the same brand/viscosity can be very different oils between continents.

But as a start, something with BMW LL04 approval.

I have a USDM e90, so it would be the same as if someone who was drving thier car hard in the US roads. The autobahn really gives me space to push my car and keep it at high speeds, so i wouldn't know if castrol is better or Mobile 1. I have always used mobile one, but some might think otherwise.

I would not worry about the brand. You want an oil that is approved as LL01 or LL04, beyond that everything you hear is marketing noise.

IMO of course.

I am a big fan of Klotz synthetic oils - we carry them. It is the ONLY group V base synthetic on the market.

I tried using one of those strap wrenches yesterday. It just couldn't get enough traction to loosen the oil filter cap. The cap on these is pretty thin and a hard type of plastic, too. Maybe the dealer overtightened mine though. I get a dealer change in 6000 miles, so just left the filter in. Looks like I'll be ordering the tool for my next DIY change, which probably won't be for well over a year.

BTW- I believe Royal Purple is LL-01 approved, and about the same cost as Mobil 1 0-40. I bought the Mobil though.

Is there anyway to get a different oil cap for our e90'S? mY Friend with a evo has the same cap, but autozone has a different oil cap if wanted with the lug nut on it, like my rents x5.
