I put this stuff on our shower glass in Asheville before the shower was ever used:

https://www.nanovations.com/nano-glass-coating.htm

Works incredibly well. Sure wish I knew about it when we remodeled our FL bathroom.

Dawn Powerwash for outdoor cleaning, such as sliding door frames.

Also Barkeepers Helper or Bon Ami for cleaning lots of stuff where a mild abrasive is needed. I use it in annual deep clean of my grill.

Dawn Powerwash Spray and cold water are also an excellent way to wash eyeglass lenses.

Invite all your neighbors over for dinner.

After dinner, kill them, enslave them or imprison them all and take their land to establish dominance.

Sorry, the holiday next week has me in a Thanksgiving kinda holiday mood.

Seriously though, change the direction of your ceiling fans twice a year. Counter clock-wise in summer to push cold air down and the hot air up, reverse for winter months. Should save you between 7-10% on your energy bills.

Drill a hole in the back/lower section of your trash can. This allows the full trash bag to be easily lifted out, rather than creating the suction effect. I also keep a sock of rice in the bottom to reduce odors.

Put dry pasta, rice and flour in the freezer for a week to avoid weevils, also known as pasta bugs.

We had a serious mouse problem over the winter and spring. Construction a few blocks away where they are building a new edition, plus two ice storms that caused huge amounts of brush to be piled up in yards, waiting for the city to haul them off, gave the perfect breeding ground/hiding places.

Sealing interior things didn't work, exterminator and poison didn't work either.

I finally called a wildlife remediation company. They don't use poison that way you don't end up with dead mice in the walls rotting away. They put some traps in the attic above the garage and made sure the entire EXTERIOR of the house was completely sealed.

Then they come back and check the traps every week for 4 weeks. By week 3 no more in the traps, and we haven't had any problems since in the last 9 months.

$1400 well spent.

Put masking tape anywhere you are going to drill/saw, and the edges of the wood won't splinter.

You can cut a long length of wire coathanger and chuck it in your drill to put a starter hole through a wall or other material that is too thick to run a normal long bit thru - use dykes/plier cutter so the tip is sharp. Don't re-use it more than a couple of times - the heat will make the tip brittle, and you don't want it to break off in the pilot hole.

putting a little bar soap on the screw threads will make for easier install, especially in hardwoods (just pull the screw along a bar lightly).

This is the move for sure on acrylic countertops.

Or you can just use ultra high molecular weight polyethylene film coated with a pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive. Otherwise known as UHMW tape.

I needed just one 6' fence panel to protect a side entrance so instead I did a bodge job lashing the loose edge of it to neighbours concrete post with a thick nylon string going over a strengthening piece of wood on the other side. I didn't want to order just one panel.

There is a technique for every job that will make it better, and sometimes faster. It is worth learning before starting. Old days we’d chat at the hardware store, now it is YouTube.

I used to believe in buying or renting the right tools for the job. Now I understand that the more tools I own, the more jobs I take on. So I got rid of all but the basic tools in our last relo.

For those w OCD about not making holes in walls, 3M Command Hooks/etc are a godsend (some can even hold 25lbs+!). The only holes I have are for the TV and window coverings.

Spring-loaded punch. It will punch a pit in hard metal, wood, sheet rock, whatever. I use it all the time to set a point for my drill.

Dry wall anchor screws. No more fear hanging heavy items on walls. Yeah, it creates a big hole when you remove them, but it's easy to fill.

Tools, tools, tools. Use the right tool for the job. It makes life much easier and will give you confidence.
