I've found in my shopping that their rims generally seem to be heavy. I personally like ASA, which are licensed by BBS. They're made in S Korea and have some lightweight rims for a good price. My rims are 21.5 lbs and cost $89 ea. I don't like the looks, but I've been complimented on them since I put them on. Go figure!

After my first experience on Friday (only 3" though) I totally agree, love the RWD with snows on all corners. I see people at work with the xi and all seasons, definitely think we're better off once we're at speed.

Well there is this simple Physics concept called friction. After all if we didn't have wet conditions to deal with we could all drive on slicks. So tire technology has evolved to handle various loss of traction conditions in the same tire/tread design.

I have driven 2 E39s through 8 winters but since I believe in friction I bought another set of wheels with performance winters This was a huge improvement over the stock tires of course and that's why I did that.

All the xi models do is apply a little more force to the wheels that are losing traction. You still need the tires to adhere to the wet/icy/snowy surface though, so dedicated winter tires do in fact help an xi model.

In the end most contemporary BMWs will do just fine with 4 snows on a level surface. But you are not going experience the same degree of satisfaction on uphill grades. Period.

That was my intent ede92. The common person driving an Xi think thats good enough, and dont even think about buying snow tires. Being only RWD I understand that I wont move in the snow without snow tires. I do also know that an Xi equipped vehicle will run circles around me if they have snow tires on. Thats the compromise I have made to keep my gas mileage/tire wear and IMO driveability slightly better during the dry months.

I am with you. There are cars though that seem to be designed not to apply any force in slippery conditions - like a Mercedes 190 we used to own or even a 90's 3er. Even 100lbs in the back couldn't help those snow pigs :-)

So traction control and the near perfect balance exhibited on newer BMWs has helped out a lot for those who stick (no pun intended) with snows on a RWD BMW.

Happy sliding

For buckeyebimmer, who wanted more angles of the ASA JH3 wheels. First, a few from two winters ago. First shot is the last wash and wax they got before they went on the car for the winter.

And here are a couple from last winter. I almost waited too long before putting them on the car -- I actually put them on while it was snowing outside.
