I think that there is a big inter-generational difference in the way that we approach the internet.

Most younger people are happy to splash details of their lives all over the net on social networking sites, web pages, blogs and forums like this one.

The main issue is that somehow the web creates a feeling of intimacy in what is a very public medium. On a forum like this, you feel like you are having a private conversation with a group of friends. It's easy to forget that anyone in the world can eavesdrop.

For instance, there is a chap on pistonheads who was prosecuted for dangerous driving and comments made on the forum were used against him in court. So if your identity is public you really do need to be careful about what people say.

In contrast, people who grew up before the internet have different feelings about privacy.

I try not to post anything on this forum that would identify me personally to the wider world, which includes my reg plates.

If you post up information of illegal activity the Police cannot prove it was you that typed it although they would have the finger pointing at you with IP addresses. If they arrested you under suspiscion of illegal activity they could confiscate your computer. Your computer holds internet activity in temp folders and history. They could then prove you typed the incriminating evidence on your computer on to a public domain. Guilty as charged. A video is helpful but not essential. Be careful what you post on youtube. They do look out for stuff and people are starting to be prosecuted for dangerous and illegal acts.

I'm cynical about the whole thing. I've not really got a problem in people knowing my business, including my reg plate, mainly for the reasons mentioned (i.e. local theives following or seeing your around being more likely) but my main complaint is, no matter how careful you are, there are load of sh!tty companies out there selling your details willy-nilly to anyone willing to part with a little cash.

That said, if I really wanted to blend into the background, I wouldn't have shelled out a small fortune on a private plate and drive eye-catching cars!!!!!

How many times have you entered a legitiment competition to then be bombared by telesales. Or, got an online car insurance quote, from ONE company, to then be bombarded again with other companies already knowing your details (including reg plate, name, dob, occupation, address, car type, colour, etc).

Drives me mental, I'm a financial adviser, so regulated to the hilt so have to prove I'm storing data correctly (ala data protection), amoungst other things, whereas others have no regulatation at all and just sell your data.

That said, I have started to become a little more careful; shredding stuff, etc.

Ah, rant over...

The incident happened at a 'meet' between a group of people associated with pistonheads. The person concerned lost control of his car and collided with a motorcyclist, who was seriously injured.

The police established a link with the forum and his online identity. Certain statements made on the forum were used as evidence in court. In my view this exacerbated the situation and probably increased his punishment.

He was convicted of dangerous driving and sentanced to a 1 year prison sentence (I think he actually served 3 months)

There is a lot of detail about the incident on pistonheads and it makes for very sobering reading.

Driver is jailed after crash ‘wrecks life’ of the victim.

A car driver has been sent to prison for a year for seriously injuring an oncoming motorcyclist in a crash while using one of Cumbria’s most notorious roads as his “own personal racetrack.”

Daniel David Olley, 28, of Boroughgate, Appleby was also banned from driving for three years after he pleaded guilty at Carlisle Crown Court to a charge of driving dangerously on the Hartside pass.

Judge Paul Batty QC told him he had “wrecked” the life of former oil rig engineer Brian Sadler, 41, who is never likely to work again because of the terrible injuries he suffered.

Prosecutor Linda Vance told the court Olley had used an internet website to arrange a meeting of fellow drivers of high powered Honda Civic cars, describing the A686 as “a good little road for cars like our type” and boasting he used it “like my own race track.”
At lunchtime on Sunday, April 30, last year, he and his friends were seen driving at high speed in a convoy up the hill, she said.

Olley passed two cars – causing the driver of one of them to tell police later that he had been going “like a bat out of hell” – and then tried to overtake another on a blind bend before losing control and hitting Mr Sadler’s bike coming the other way, she said.
Mr Sadler suffered severe injuries to his head and arm and for a while doctors thought he might die.

He has permanently lost the use of his right arm and has needed several operations for other injuries to his head and legs.
He is still in constant pain and is never likely to work again, Ms Vance said.

In mitigation barrister Malcolm Dutchman Smith said Olley now admitted that his attitude to driving had been “arrogant and inappropriate.”
But he said “the one positive thing that comes out of this sad case is that that arrogance is now at an end.”

Judge Batty said it was clear that Olley had been “showing off” to the other Civic drivers.
“You were using this road as your own personal racetrack, and it had appalling consequences for your victim, whose life has been wrecked by your selfish behaviour.”

Well thats fair enough. But they didnt nail him for something on the site. Thats unfortunate circumstances.

Thats something that anyone who enjoys driving and uses a site to talk about it faces.

You could be driving like a granny and have an accident but cuz you talk about speeding that could go against you.

I rekon he got stitched up anyyhow.

That's my point really Carl. Everything on this website is available to the public. If one of us was ever involved in a serious accident (god forbid) and faced charges regarding our driving, statements made here may end up coming back to haunt us, even if the incident was not our fault.

Food for thought.

In terms of this incident the person involved took full responsibility. However, his sentence was probably worse because of his posts on pistonheads.

Because he admitted speeding at some points on there?

Well then, even if you didnt post on a website, they could still find out that you have done Trackdays and a ''keen driver'' who most probably ''speeds'' anyhow. So we all f**ked then.

I don't think trackday experience would be a concern, but I'd be careful not to post stuff about street racing or anything that sounded like careless driving.

There are a number of serving police officers who are active on pistonheads and probably many more than read sites like this one.
