Cool...
I'm glad I opt 09 over 08.
And yes, 09 plays DVD as standard feature.
I just threw in DVD while waiting for GF for heck of it and it actually played it and was surprised how nice it looks.

DVD Not Playing

I have an '09, but the DVD play feature is not working. Have taken it back into the dealer to have that and one other item fixed, and when they were done they said it was simply that the e-brake had to be engaged (doesn't state that in the manual), so I thought I was the idiot. But when I went to pick it up, it still wasn't playing a DVD.

When you select the DVD, it starts for just a moment and then kicks you out of the DVD play screen and says that it must be in Park to play a DVD.

Anyone else having this problem? If so, have you been able to have your dealer figure out what's causing it? My sales guy said he has one other customer having the same problem.

Yup - at least in California, a movie/video/or any similar (if on in the car while in motion) cannot be "at any point forward of the back of the driver's seat, or is operating and visible to the driver while driving the motor vehicle." See section 27602 CVC for further. (this doesn't apply to backup/position cameras or GPS/mapping devices.)

Soooooo....anyway.... I think it'd be cool, also, with the nice BMW sound system providing the soundtrack... (hee hee)

TVandNav2go has a TV Free / DVD Activator which will override the e-brake engagement and allow dvd's to be played while driving for the '09's

You can play a movie DVD in the '09 but to get the video the handbrake must be engaged. With the handbrake off you don't get the video but you do get the soundtrack.

FYI
I just called tvandnav2go
http://www.tvandnav2go.com/home_text.html

He told my by end of February they will have a plug and Play unit (no wire tapping) that will allow the 2009 3series Idrives to play movies while in motion.
He guessed the cost would be around $299.

No idea I have never seen or done one...
But according to him it is plug and play (ie - remove some dash components, hook it up, replace and try it out)

$299 to defeat the e-brake code? Ha! That's ballsy considering they have to provide NO engine to do any of the DVD playback.

from what I know, my brother was able to bypass this problem with his dvd player by switching some wire that is connected to the e-brake straight to the ground. that way its always getting a positive signal for the dvd player and you can watch movies on the go
