I want to thank all in this thread. After a bit of fighting to get the mirror open, I successfully completed this upgrade and it works great!

This is seriously one of the best mods for us E9X folks. I replaced my 2011 M3 with a 2015 M5 repeater. Works flawlessly. Thank you!!
Smashed windows are so common where I live that you can’t leave anything in the car, so my garage remote gets stored in the trunk. Annoying AF to lock/unlock trunk & hide/retrieve remote, but better than having a car break-in turn into home burglary. |

This worked great for me as well. Donor mirror was a 2012 650ix. Worked perfectly in my 2011 E90 M3.
One thing to note that I didn't see mentioned elsewhere is you need to use not just the module from the donor mirror, but the connecting cable as well. Also, the easiest way to get the mirror to pop open is to insert your non-marring trim tool in the notch just underneath the homelink 1-3 buttons. |

+1 on this mod. Very straightforward. Got one off a 2012 5 series for $23 shipped on eBay. Exact part number as noted by OP. It comes with a bonus too, the clear/smoked clown nose 🤌🏼

I was able to make this swap on a 2011 1M which never had Homelink to begin with, but there does seem to be a lottery on the mirrors.
I first bought a 2015 i8 mirror, but it had a Homelink v3 module in it. The date printed on the module was 2015, so I don't know why they were still using v3 that late in production. Next up I tried a 2012 550i mirror and that had Homelink v4 (although no digital compass). So 2012 5 series seems to be pretty reliable to do this mod for mirrors using the twist connection. I ended up with the 5 series Homelink v4 module in the i8 mirror to get all the features I wanted. |
