what kills the m3 for me is the price tag, and that it is bad on fuel.... it looks hot, sounds sexy as hell and probably handles like its on rails.....but would have a hard time justifying the cost.

Could be as low as $2800 in mods.
And the exhaust is only worth 10-12 hp so even without it the 335i would of won. And that was with the 6MT car which is a tad slower than 6AT car.

Did the M3 have a passenger in it too?
If not, the 335i could of won on tune only.

But either way, I agree with the others, there's more to an M3 than straight line speed.
It's just that it doesn't have enough straight line speed to hang with very lightly modded 335i's

Absolutely right, 335i would win with tune only and high octane.

And yes, unfortunately the M3 has an appetite for fuel even on highway trips.

If your buying an M3 you don't care about gas mileage!

Definitely a good kill, but slap some mods on the M3 and its gonna be a tight race.

I'm thinking 93 octane and jb3 hotter maps might be sufficient

Nicely done...what do you think the outcome would be if you raced a M6? Reason being is my friend has one and wants to race 1/4 mile? He told me he would be pissed if he lost being that he spend over 100 gees for M6 vert!!

M6 is shit fast, your gonna need more then a JB3/V3 to stay side by side.
Something like a race map Jb3 with 100 octane, and some supporting mods.

If you had a Coupe, i would say get some race gas and put that race map on and see what is what since the M6 you are racing is a VERT and they are around 400+ pounds heavier then the Coupe.

A M6 vert vs a modified 335i coupe would be a ncie looking race.

I'm sure some of you have perused the suspension/brakes discussion on here. For those of you that have, the differences in suspension between the 335 and M3 are not that dramatic. Take a few pieces from the M3 parts catalog and swap them with our 335 parts, put some different brakes on the 335, swap out for a good coilover system, and slap on a tune, and you're handling like the M3, going faster than an M3 in a straight line, and did I mention you weigh less because of your I6?

Brakes: 2500 (roughly)
M3 parts swap: 400 + 600 labor = 1000
Coilovers: 1500
Tune: 600-1000

Total: 6k (could really be only 3.5k if you didnt want the brakes...but to "complete" the package I guess)

And the only thing you wont have are the flared fenders, and the giant boner from owning an M

Thats great that the M3 is a better track machine, but I don't drive on the track but maayybe twice a year. Other than that, I'll take the car thats faster in real life 99% of the time, with better fuel economy to boot. With the money I saved, I'll buy an Evo 9 and with light mods make 400 whp with the stock turbo and toast the M3 around the track also. YMMV.

See the times that this M6 Convt ran at the track. If you are racing in the 1/4 mile, depending on the driver, you just might roast him like all the 335i BMWs did this day at Famoso. FYI..It was very a very slow day based on traction and ambient conditions. See below for the M6 Verts Runs..

That is a keen point. In 90% of you driving, the superior torque will be enjoyable without even having to rev the thing to redline. Case in point, a Indy Car can achieve incredible 1/4 mile performances. But driving it around town would more than irritating.

Sticky runs a ~12.17 @ 115mph. And he is trying to make his car even faster. Hopefully we can get some video of him trying to run Terry later this month at Famoso!

I know, I saw the video's, he has an 11 second m3 for sure but I'd like to see how his m3 does on the highway

Very true. The M3 is still in its own league with exceptional top end, but the tuned 335i is no joke. Now, with the transfer of M3 parts to the 335i, the argument of the M3 being a more track friendly car is quite a bit diminished as well. Dropping a couple G's to a fully loaded 335i is definitely more economical choice for day-to-day driving.
I absolutely agree. Even though I'd rather have an M3 hands down, it is way too over-priced.
