I am fortunate to have never been hospitalized over night; worst injury was stitches a few times. No broken bones. A life of “near misses”.
Weight is an issue - every 10 years my metabolism seems to slow and if I don’t cut calories or increase activity, weight increases. Diet has changed, can no longer enjoy potatoes or milk, cream, soft cheeses etc. Have to limit sugars. Just GI discomfort, nothing serious. Judgement, experience, patience and perhaps some wisdom have increased over time. Reflexes, vision, hearing have all diminished. |

I have lunch with a group of retired coppers about once a month, most are a few years older than me and I feel like I'm the odd man out. They all complain about their health and talk about the drug benefit and funeral benefits we get with our retirement benefits. I remember when I got hired being told that the average retired cop lived to collect about 18 pension cheques, (one a month) and was about 57 years old when the end came. I said FUCK that. I have been retired for almost 4 years now and am in the gym 3 times a week and walk (the knees don't like to run anymore, old work injury) for an hour + every other day. I plan on collecting my pension longer than I paid into it, 30 years, 8 months and 12 days....but who's counting. DON'T LET THE OLD MAN IN! Last edited by Salty Dog; 01-18-2020 at 10:39 AM.. |

I agree with the sentiment that I sure don't feel 61 in my head. I don't feel much different than I did when I was 40. I'm in better shape now than I was then, too. I had my "mid-life crisis" car, a nice Z4 (which is why I started posting here years ago). Although it wasn't a mid-life crisis as much as a necessity to own a second car because I was commuting 110 miles r/t every day. I needed to keep the mileage down on both cars. When I got my current job 2.5 miles from home, the Z4 wasn't needed and became more of a parking hassle than it was worth. Now I throw my discretionary income into my bikes. And yes, they're a lot cheaper than another car or other....ahem...distractions.
My biggest gripe about aging, well, two actually, is my eye sight and my snail pace metabolism that lets me gain weight in an instant but makes me work like a dog to get rid of it. And while some folks gain patience as they age, I've gone the other way. My temper has gotten way shorter. That bothers me a lot. I really need to take yoga classes or something to get that angry old man back in his cage.

I think my biggest issue is the filter between my brain and my mouth no longer works. It’s pretty liberating though. I just don’t care anymore.

Great idea for a thread!
I'm soon to turn 58. My only complaint is the creeping suspicion that young women no longer find me dangerous. I can live with that, I guess. I'm continually becoming more self-aware and better able to keep out of my own way emotionally and spiritually. That's something I utterly lacked at 20 or 30, and would make the same mistakes and spin around in the same circle over and over. I have a career that I love, and it creates abundance that benefits a lot of people besides me. I find this very satisfying. I have no intention of retiring, ever. I don't drink or smoke or do any street drugs. I think this helps with clarity and focus.

I work at a university, so I see younger women daily. They all smile at me and I know exactly what they're thinking.

Sailed through the fifties like there was nothing to it, then in the sixties, out of the blue, had to battle two hospitalizations for pneumonia (three years apart). That second bout had me wondering if there would be a recovery. It's a stumbling block for many seniors, so get the shot. These seventies actually seem pretty good so far...although there's sadly this phenomena...I've actually become invisible to pretty young women. Additionally, still must grimace at much younger posters commenting on why age was a reason they gave up the third pedal. Ack! Oh and...want to feel better about yourself? Make it a point to attend your 50th high school class reunion.

Looking like baldy grandpa at first sight, being mid 30ths and feeling like beginning of 20ths...that sux! Meanwhile my "hairstyle" is fitting my age but nontheless my personal attitude of internal feeling, which is more located at the end of 30ths. There it helps a lot if other ppl are guessing me for just an early 40th guy

A friend of mine and I were sitting on the sidewalk in front of our favorite coffee shop on the first warm day of Spring, about 20 years ago. He would have been about 55 then and I would have been in my late 30's. We very intently watched a gaggle of 3 young college girls walk past wearing shorts and looking delectable. After they passed, he said in a scolding tone "Hey, get out of my fantasy!" Laughed our asses off. He was one of the "old farts" I loved hanging around and gained a lot of wisdom from.

We made the "temporary" move to Illinois before most of this year's class was born. Can't believe how fast time has flown by.

I've had many conversations with the neighborhood husbands when we have BBQ get togethers who all are alot younger than me but look much older than me are shocked when they find out how old i am and the fact i'm in much better shape than them. not bragging or anything but i always seem to have these conversations a lot. i'll be honest, i don't know if it's because i go to the gym to stay fit and i take care of myself or my friends just let themselves go and it shows? i dunno? anyone else in the same boat? just to make my point here's a recent pix of me

Little of both, I think. Staying fit at our age takes work and many folks either can't or won't make the time to do it. My epiphany hit when I turned 58. I stepped on the bathroom scale and it nearly hit 290lbs. I was stunned. I knew I had been gaining, but I didn't realize it was that bad. I thought in 2 years I'd be 60 and over 300, and then I'd be in deep shit. So I bought a bike and started riding. Mr Tonka and some of the other guys in the road biking thread gave me some much needed advice and encouragement when I was starting out and I'm forever grateful to them for that. Now I'm at 220lbs. I was down to 205, but I've been less strict with my diet the last year or so and I've crept back up. Still, at 6'3" it doesn't look bad. I still want to buckle down again and try to get to my military weight of 190. Just need to get motivated.

So I don't know if this is Karma or what, but my best friend (coming up on 40 years together) out of the blue texted me a picture of us at my second wedding....nevermind for now...hes in the grey suit jacket and red tie, and then the pic of me and him together on his 60th last year, I'm on the right.....I feel like I'm the same guy but damn when did I get old.

If you don't have one, get a smart trainer (Tacx, wahoo, etc) that you can hook up to your computer. Then you can ride the Spring Classics or whatever sounds like fun, get the scenery and variable resistance as if you were on the road. Not as good as actually being outside, but is way more interesting. Last one I did had a 2 mile climb at 6-13%.

54 here, I agree with others that 50s these days is different than it was 20 years ago. Or maybe I just feel it is because I'm on the other end of the thinking. I'm a pure believer that you're only as old as you think you are. Pretty active, mountain biking, took up playing hockey for the first time 5 years ago, work out a few times a week just to keep the injuries away. I have a young daughter (12) and still need to be able to put a scare into the boys when they start coming around. |
