Anyone ever gotten stuck with snow tires??

lol, i pretty much drive in the snow with DSC fully off, more interesting that way when making a turn on a empty intersection.

i have a 328xi cpe with 6mt and blizzak LM-22s and it has been nothing short of extraordinary in the snow. it runs circles around all the suvs out there. i have never once even gotten close to stuck, and the car never loses traction when starting unless im purposely getting the wheels spinning. My lease is up in october, and I really really want to get a 335i, because i want to be able to chirp the tires, etc, but i think i may end up with another xi because they are so good in the snow.

Got stuck once this year. High centered and spinning on ice in my RWD with Dunlop snows. Got out the shovel and dug in front of all of the tires and freed myself.

This is the biggest thing that I've noticed on this forum: different people have different ideas about what getting around "just fine" in the winter means. In my experience, it's true that you can get around "just fine" in the winter with RWD and snow tires if you live in an area where you don't routinely need to dive up icy hills, but you will occasionally experience things like fishtailing and wheelspin on acceleration, and you might get stuck once in a while. If that's acceptable to you, then that's fine.

Of course, what's "just fine" for some people is unacceptable to others. Some people don't think they should have to resort to tricks like kitty litter, rubber mats, or the like to drive in the winter. Other people have to be able to get places no matter how much snow or ice are on the ground. For those people, AWD, particularly with snow tires, is usually going to be a better choice.

My 335i with 17" Blizzak's is a little better in the snow than my e36 328 was with 15" all season tires. The 335 with snow tires is better in the snow than our honda odyssey mini van with all seasons (in my opinion). I think the traction control on the 335 works really well. I rode in a 335 xi with about 4 inches of new snow and the difference was night and day though.

I still think it's pretty misleading to state that RWD+snows is "just fine" if at the same time you get stuck, even it's once per winter, much less 1-2 times per month. And if you're using tricks, that counts as being stuck.

But I do agree that it does depend a lot on where you drive and whether you expect all drivers of your car to be able to get the car unstuck. Most people drive relying on the fact that help is a phone call away. I don't live like that, and I also drive in a lot of areas with no cell phone coverage. Sure, I have survival gear, but I'm not that thrilled about spending the night at 12,000 feet in sub-zero temps.

My wife also drives the car and there's no way I want her stuck, in any situation.

^ haha dont worry bout it man. there wasnt a single car on the road and i was only doing this to test the limits a bit. i never drive fast in the snow, it was a one time deal. i am very amazed at how great the snow tires stop the car and how great the stability control is at keeping the car on its intended path.
