“2. For all true speeds up to the design speed of the vehicle, the true speed shall not exceed the indicated speed.
3. For all true speeds of between 25 mph and 70 mph (or the maximum speed if lower), the difference between the indicated speed and the true speed shall not exceed— V/10 + 6.25 mph where V = the true speed of the vehicle in mph. “ Source: https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/...chedule/3/made It’s also based on this EU standard: https://unece.org/transport/vehicle-...ulations-21-40 |

My 230i on optional 19s overreads by a bit more than 5%. I calibrated it against the Google Maps speed readout at 60km/h & 100km/h, and I've been through lots and lots of speed cameras at the 5% speed (rarely even 1-2 km/h more, accidentally) without any problems - and they're really tough on speed limits, with minimal leeway, in my state - so I'm confident about the 5%.
I have the speed limit warning on the HUD set to more than 3km/h up to 60km/h and more than 5km/h above that. (I wish there was the option for it to beep and not just flash the speed limit display.) 5% is really handy - just take the first number, halve it and add it to the limit. All that said - that's just for my car. No guarantee others will be the same. I've had a couple of MINIs at 5% too, but one was only 2-3%. Tyre wear could theoretically affect it a little too. Note that cruise control can go 1-2km/h over the setting downhill, although it's much better than previous BMW/MINIs in that regard. (For US readers, 60km/h = 37.5 mph, 100km/h = 62.5 mph)

I suspect my speedometer is way off.
Yesterday i drove by a sign that had a posted speed limit of 55mph, my speedometer was reading 105 mph. |

Took along my Garmin Nav with me on a mixed ride today: City, freeway, country roads and mountain roads.
Speedo in car is definitely reading faster than actual speed. Examples: At 78 on the Nav, the speedo indicated 75. At 45 on the Nav, the speedo indicated 43. There is a temporary radar speed sign near my house where the speed limit is 35 and I rode by it at 38 and it read 36. So, at least on mine, 5% high sounds about right. Not sure I understand the logic of having that much inaccuracy. None of my 3 BMW motorcycles had this issue and my '20 Honda Ridgeline is also spot on. Never had this with any of my many, many autos and trucks. |
