Just flick to mpg on the in-dash display and hold the selector button down and it resets? Or is that not what you mean..

well i'm getting around 52/50 MPG on a round 30 mile trip which apx 60% motorway and 40% urban
on a full week of driving mix i'll get an average of about 48MPG. I'm not heavy footed, the fuel bill means too much to me and i'm using Shell V-Power Diesel |

Mine does the same - dec 05 model so pre-ED also. Sounds about right - they're not that economical tbh. BMW checked mine too, it was fine. You might see 40 on a run. Mine got down to 25 when it was cold - keen driving and a/b roads mainly.

Today we have hit 25 mpg aftre resetting the comp and doing some mixed driving. TWENTY FIVE WTHF? Can the MAF be causing this? Can i test to see if it is faulty? How do i do that? I know no error codes showed on the diag. Also, i found a wee bit of oil in the inlet of my turbo (see piccy)....is that bad? HELP Jinj |

So is the general concensus that there is nothing wrong with my car?
If i unplug the MAF sensor, should the car run better if it was faulty? Jinj |

I get 25mpg average in my 330i. With similar driving I managed 32mpg in my 530d. 25mpg in a 320d is very low. Have you checked the old fashioned way ... i.e. brim the tank, zero the odometer, drive for a couple of days, brim it again and work out the mpg manually? |

I get 420 miles or so from a full tank in the 330d
So if your MPG is correct, I would expect you to get around 300 or so??? If so you should get the car looked at - the fuel savings if there is a problem will pay for any repair!! |

Jinj,
I have similar issues. I’ve just picked up a 320d touring (Oct 05 plate) this weekend. I noticed the fuel consumption was reading 27mpg (I was getting this on my Volvo 850 T-5) so I reset the computer. From driving around feathering the throttle I have now managed to eek out 33ish mpg.... early days tho I know. One of the reasons the missus agreed to a new car was the better mpg.... I’d be interested to hear if you do any better mate! Cheers J |

I dont know.....just very disappointed. I really love the car but this MPG is terrible.......you can get ALOT more shove for 27MPG elsewhere. JJ |

Mine will happily return 25 - I average about 30-35 (not much motorway/long distance stuff). They're not very economical. It's a heavy car, tuned to 160-odd bhp, pre-eD. The best I'll get is around 40 on a long, steady cruise. I was fairly disappointed too tbh. But it's still a decent motor...

Sorry to hijack the post slightly. Does the type of diesel you buy make that much difference? I have tried BP ultimate albeit only one tank and didn't really notice any difference from the supermarket fuel. To be honest at 15-20 pence more per litre there should me a big difference otherwise is it really justifiable? For the record I have a 320D Sport, E91 auto and I'm not as impressed as I might be. I did a 400 mile drive down to Plymouth the day I bought it and got 48mpg which was great. On my normal commute which has alot of dual carriageway in it I can squeeze 40mpg if I drive like a granny. I've also heard that diesels are worse in the cold, is this true? If so then this is the opposite of petrol engines that seem to thrive in cold weather.

Do you want to buy my car with that mpg
That's worse than my old 335d........seriously that needs checking out. Got to be worth the cost of paying for a diagnostic from an indie whatever. |

Diagnostic shows nothing im afraid.............no errors
It was a BMW specialist though and not a dealership........ Much difference between 2 diagnostics? |

Hi JinJur. that mpg is absolute crap for a 163bhp E90. (my mate gets over 50 outa his 2006 model). Will be interesting to see the figures when the weather changes as the cold weather affects it badly. I'd get it checked out but why use a stealer if the car'sout of warranty. Maybe you should ask around and get a local, well respected independant to do the diagnostic - will cost you a lot less and probably do a more thorough job to boot. I'm averaging high 40s combined and I don't hang around although it's an ed model
