As for the spec

So, onto the spec - I have so far ordered it as:
Alpine White - Any colour you like as long as it's (Jerez) Black. I believe White is very now. It'll wear off when everyone has white in 2-3 years.
Novillo Fox Red Leather - Yes over Saddle.
19" M double spoke alloys - Oh yes, unless you plan to find some v. nice replacements
DCT 7 speed transmission - Nooooo!
Heated front seats - Yep, wish I had gone for these over the last few months
Hi-Fi with prof DSP - Yes
6FL USB - Yes
Bluetooth Phone prep with Telematics - Yes

Others to consider

Adaptive headlights with High Beam Assist
High Gloss Shadowline
Extended Leather - will look good with Fox, Black and Carbon Trim
Sun Protection - As you said the rear screen will never be as good as factory, just get the fronts done as I did.
Black Carbon Trim

Just my thoughts to add to the mix
I agree with your thoughts on the wheels - I have a set of 225M's sitting in my stores at work, hardly used 'cos I wanted to be different and get the M6 reps instead. Bit of a waste really as the M6's were cheaper than the 225M option.

Not fussed about adaptive lights - don't really do too much night driving so would prefer to spend elsewhere. The blinds are becoming tempting.

Do you mean the black leather carbon trim? That box was almost ticked also!

Thing is, EVERY option is nice, but a line has to be drawn somewhere. It is just knowing when to stop ticking those boxes!!

That's my colour of choice. Not sure about too popular.... I mean how many M3's are out there?

What is your colour of choice....white or silverstone?

Popular was prob the wrong word, just that every time I see an M3 or a press pic for one, they often seem to be in Silverstone. I also think that red or saddle leather would not work with Silverstone. It would need black leather and I have had that for the last 2 yrs and wanted something different and a bit bolder.

There are several 19'' wheels out there that would make your car 'individual' so worth considering. Selling the BMW 19'' wheels could easily fund a replacement set.

The Black Leather Carbon Trim is the dash and door trims I believe. Looking for a 'dry' carbon fabric to wrap my trims to emulate this in two M3's I've seen. Second choice would be Piano Black rather than the Aluminium trim I currently have.

I bought the Adaptive and High Beam Assist as it was a package deal when I bought mine. Thought it would be a waste of money but it is a nice extra in the Winter nights.

As with all options, sometimes you can't see the benefit until you have had them. Then it's difficult to live without.

White with a hint of CF inside and out would be

I'd go with the folding mirrors too, very useful.

As for the inside, heart over head. Why be sensible,I rarely think of resale when buying a car?

Red, I go through exactly the same problems when I order a new car and can deliberate for hours over spec. I am sure a few options are worth something 2nd hand at 3 yrs old but lets be honest they are few and far between so it's your car spec for your pleasure.

Worth something 2nd hand I would guess the 19s and the phone and maybe just maybe the fancy dampers and the M3 buyer might like an upgraded hi-fi and heated seats which should be standard fit on this car.

I have always brought my cars cash (Would not mind a Guarenteed residual at the mo.) but the point is that when you see your options going up to say £5k you think twice before writing the cheque.

I would have not to much extra - something like:

Manual
Silverstone with Fox red Leather
19s
Heated Seats
Front Isofix - if not standard
Bluetooth
Rear tints
Dampers - Maybe but prob a waste of money for me.

Have fun putting the final spec together it will be great whatever you choose you cannot go wrong - but don't bore the wife to much going through it.

I do fancy a few carbon goodies for the outside (mirror caps, aero lips, etc) - subtle, good quality and not OTT, so the carbon leather would prob match quite well with long term plans

Fully agree about the interior, hence why I have spec'd red (poss saddle but need to see it first!!)

Saddle brown is not available on the m3.

I have individual piano black trim and it is stunning. Expensive, though.

I'd buy your 19 inch rims if you did'nt want them

Bamboo is quite similar from the looks of it. Bit of a beige cop-out colour though ha ha - will stick with red I think.

I fitted the piano black trim to the missus old E46 compact, and whilst it looked ace, it seemed to scratch and mark easily?

The carbon effect leather does look nice though and hopefully a little more durable and wont scratch?

Will bear you in mind for the rims

Please don't go for brown/ tan leather it is yucky very 70 s my Jewey used to have it and I really hated it at least the interior was of that time though.

The red will be bella gorgeous and contrast white fabulously, go red.

Apart from that I can't see what else you possibly need unless you would like a Sat Nav maybe?

It will be months away still tho I am afraid.

They have a spec-changeable build slot at BMW....BUT....the factory is closing down for a month and then it has to be built/shipped. It will be mid April here and ready for sale mid July.

Not sure how I am going to be able to wait once I know it exists and is on the road Gonna be tough!!

Time to stop playing with the 'configurator' and wake her up with pillow talk about scintillating acceleration, awesome performance and unrelenting thrust.
Come the morning, the extra ££££'s you added on options will pale into insignificance, and all you'll get is a smile

Well good luck with new car just a couple of thing I will point out Fox red is not red! I would see it in a car before you order I sold one with that colour and it was minging.

Folding mirrors a must
Indavidual hifi rock but so does the price
I would get M3 19's
Deff DCT will help with value as you can buy manual cars sub 30k now dct are much better dct is much better than smg
EDC is ment to be good I had it on our demo car but never used but ment to good for resale cant see it myself.

This the one I had for a weekend it was a launch car so high spec and no customer had theres yet can see my old X5 in the drive too
