Some wiring diagrams.

I think, though I'm not too sure, what we call the "white connector" is the steptronic switch / connector X1561 on the E9x trans control diagram. And the "blue connector" could be the X9944 connector on the same diagram.

allan,

I think S224a is for M/S - D operation and S227 is for the PNDR. If you have to, it looks like you could use those to source the voltage for the knob, but maybe theres a dedicated source for the lights on the existing e9x step indicator that would be a better choice.

Is that the only page on the e9x steptronic? Do you see any page for the e9x step with led circuit symbols like on the M5 page? If you take a look at the M5 shift knob page you posted you can see the schematic symbol for the leds in the section you marked. Here's a reference for the electrical symbol I'm referring to: http://www.kpsec.freeuk.com/components/led.htm

Agree, I think S224a is for the M/S operation (per the EGS UP/DOWN signal on pins 2 and 3). Not sure though if S227 (a 5-pin switch) is the PNDR switch though from the component description it seems to be it.

What about the X9944 connector (6pins)? I thought this was the PNDR switch? Pin #6 of this connector carries the EGS MGA signal, which along with EGS MGE I believe handle the M/S operation.

Also, how do we match this diagram to the physical white (4pins or 6pins with 2 unused slots) and blue connectors (6pins)?

I think I understand this now. The large box in the middle of the diagram is the blue box. The indicator lights must be contained within and they are not explicitely stating that in the diagram. I missed the obvious title "Gear Indicator Lighting" on the right. S227 is the shift lever and s224a are the switches for M/S. I could be wrong though, I need to get the DVD/CD with the schematics.

Allan, do you have any clear photos of the blue box with the white and black connectors?

I wasnt planning on doing this mod, I dont like the gear pattern being different, but I have been wanting to install on on/off switch for my V1...so maybe Ill crack open the console to check things out to be sure.

I'll post the photos of the actual connectors shortly. I have them sync'd on my iphone and trying to email them to myself now.

This shows the white and blue connectors plugged into their housing. The blue housing where the blue connector is connected is probably the "blue box" that you call. That's connected to the shift plate cover / illuminated gear selection.

The detached (other white connector) is coming from the M5 shift knob.

This is my first post here. I just posted a DIY on fitting and wiring this gearknob on a E46 sedan. Here's the link: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=648665 Is this a M3 or a M5 gearknob, was told it was a M3 gearknob when I fitted it onto the car.

Looking at the WDS for the E46 gear shifter

and comparing to that of the E90/E92 it looks like X1599 are identical for both E46 and E9x.

This is what I think (hopefully I'm not wrong here):

E46 X1600 Pin1 ==> E9x X9944 Pin4 (SMG Enable)
E46 X1600 Pin2 ==> E9x X9944 Pin5 (+12V)

E46 X1193 Pin1 ==> E9x X9944 Pin2 (driving/parking lights mode)
E46 X1193 Pin2 ==> E9x X9914 Pin3 (0V/ground)

There is no ground wire in the X9944 connector and you may need to get it from somewhere else and X9914 Pin3 is 0V/ground.

You can verify this before proceeding. I am not able to verify this as I'm driving a E46.

Hope this helps.

Excellent news! I got this working. Here's an iphone shot of the wiring kit. I'll post some details and more pics when I get home later tonight.

Thanks everyone for your inputs. And of course, the credit still goes to ironic for creating ver 1.0 of this wiring kit. Now we have ver 2.0.

Edit: Special thanks to phattbam and highvoltage for the initial wiring connection tip.

Thanks. I also edited my post above. I knew I forgot to thank you specifically for your inputs.

The orange/red thingy are just jackets to group the wires together. Those are some expensive heat shrink tubing actually.

I don't think I helped out as much as I would have liked to but I will definitely give props when I get mine working. quality components for a quality kit. plus it's for your BMW, you don't want to have to tinker with it later, get it done right the first time.

This is basically version 2.0 of ironic's kit. Though I did some research and we got some ideas from other members, ironic still deserves the most of the credit for this kit.

I can definitely write one but I need to clear some potential issues first. Once I've done that and I'd be happy to write the DIY right away.

For now, I'll be updating the OP with new pics.
