That's correct - it was $4,xxx at least for me. I just picked up my 328xi and bought the extended warranty and maintenance, since this one is a keeper. Pay a little each month now...and peace of mind for 7 years. I am fairly confident that the $$$ will work out evenly and (hopefully!) to my advantage in the end.
First time I ever bought an extended anything...
