You should taste test the procede as the BMW performance tune has been in the works for about 2 years. Personally I think it's vaporware.

If your on the north side drop me a PM and I'll take you for a spin

Chris G
BMW have issued a press release about this upgrade. I went to my local dealer (in Germany) today to enquire about it (my 335i arrives in May). They have been told by BMW to expect it in July. There is no costing info yet but the guy i spoke to reckons between 2000-3000 Euro due to all the components/parts required. It ain't gonna be cheap, trust me.

My dealer told me that a space saver kit is available for the e90 sedan for $990 fitted to a newly ordered vehicle. I was told that it includes updated aluminium components for the floor of the trunk (car boot), but I am not sure if it fits flush. It also includes the jack and wheel brace. I will get it included in the package when I place the order.

$990 a bit OT but surely negotiable. I wonder if BMW will extend to offer a RFT or Non RFT option when ordering the car now that a factory fitted space saver is an option. The amount of E90's I see around the place with non RFT is growing and I bet that 98% of the drivers dont carry a spare or compressor and goo in the boot.

I reckon I should be able to negotiate a deal. To be honest, it is something I don't mind paying for.

I doubt they would offer non-RFT types because BMW say that their rims are not suitable. When I get the car I am planning to change over to 3rd party rims and non-RFT tyres.

but let's think about this for a moment.

you're paying 1k for a "fake" wheel and tire, some mounting brackets and a jack.

for that price you can get 4 new PROPER wheels (with tires if you get cheap wheels).

so in that context it is overpriced - especially if you're buying a space saver for a car which already has run flats.

if you're intending to change your tired to non-RFT then you're paying an extra i dunno how much ON TOP OF the 1k to get non-RFT just so that you can use the space saver and make your 1k worth the money.

i hope you understand what i'm getting at.

you may be right about the value, but as far as I know there isn't any other after-market solution available. I don't know any other way of fitting the spare into the floor of the car.

So you think it would be better to buy an Audi or Lexus? To me it just happens that I want a 3 series BMW. I am not prepared to compromise, especially when it comes to tyres. From a performance point of view, for me it makes abolutely no sense to buy a car with a well engineered rwd chassis, and then have the compromise of RFT tyres. They must be joking right?

Now I picked up my car I can post some pics of what the spare wheel storage looks like. The spare simply sits on the floor of the boot. There is a extra board that goes on top of the spare, so there isn't anything very tricky involved. You could practically build it from a few sheets of plywood if you were so inclinded. The jack and wheel brace is in a black bag you can see just behind the spare wheel.

Don't they have the hollow in the floor pan of the boot anymore?

Mine has a spare wheel hollow etc under the floor of the boot. It is where I keep my compressor and can of goo.

BMW rims not suitable... I don't think so. I have standard BMW rims and I got the tyres changed over to non-RFTs at 20,000km and have driven 76,000km on normal tyres and not once had a problem, and this includes two thirds of this at high speed country driving... Is this something a service advisor told you?

You are right, many people have done this. I was advised by my local tyre shop there are no problems to change over. I believe the BMW wheels are a different profile, they have an EH2 profile that is required for run-flats. Most other wheels have the J profile. It seems like it makes no significant difference when you change from RFT to conventional tyres.

Yes there is a still a hollow in the floor, but it is too small for a space-saver spare to fit inside. In my car, the spare tyre is on top of the hatch, so thats makes access to this hollow a bit more difficult. At first I thought if the plastic mouldings in the hollow were removed it might be big enough for a space-saver spare. From looking at it now I doubt that it would be possible.

It is difficult to know the actual cost because it was negotiated as part of a package. If you get it as an acessory the price might be different anyway.

The GoAuto article previously linked by BYZ mentions prices of $820 (steel) or $1025 (light-alloy). Here's the quote...

Priced at $820 as a steel item or $1025 for a light-alloy version, the ‘emergency replacement wheel’ is available as a dealer-fitted accessory, with the 15-minute fitment process costing extra (depending on your BMW dealer’s hourly rates) for new or used cars.

If anyone just wants an alloy space saver, I think the Holden commodore (also Monaro) space saver spare may also fit BMW. I recall the 5x120 stud pattern and 72.6mm hub diameter are common between the two brands. These are sometimes listed on ebay. Please double check the compatibility for yourself if you choose to go this way. You will still need to buy the jack and wheel brace kit from BMW and also some way to safely secure the spare in the boot.

Honestly, why go through all the trouble for a spare wheel? Getting a flat is an extremely rare occurence these days, and most of us would do most of their driving comfortably within range of a tyre place to go to on runflats should need be. There's also the mobility kit for the anxious ones.
Would you take out insurance for a meteor strike? For managing risk, eliminating any distractions while driving (pick your gadget) would rank way higher than worrying about having a flat tyres. Happened to me once in 30 years of driving, and only because I was stupid (too fast around a corner hitting a kerb).
(I fully expect to have my second flat within days of posting this, of course)
