Nikon lens #2159 18-200mm

for through-the-glass pictures its better to use a full circle (no cut outs) hood and put it flat against the glass. i guess you could do that without a hood also... that way you wont get reflections.

no hood on at the time, but there were about 2891271 people crammed into a little space so i was standing on a bench in the back...but yeah, thanks for the tip! that makes sense...

Just picked up the #2159 18-200mm lens and the Nikon D5000 yesterday, a bit disappointed on the body (a bit small compared to my brother's D90 which feels just spot on perfect) but overall very happy with the camera and lens so far.

its a great lens, I use it all the time.
not the best lens I have but it is certainly my most used.

I have a D40 with the 18-200mm VR and like most, bought it so that I would not have to lug around two lenses and keep changing them out. The camera was $500, the lens was $850 lol.

There is only one downside. If you use the built in flash on most Nikons at anything less than 40-45mm, the lens obscures a small area which shows up as a semicircular shadow at the bottom of the picture (the lens is quite large even when retracted). I have attached a photo depicting this.

So if I know I'm going to be taking pics indoors and am not going to need the telephoto aspect of the lens i.e. family get togethers etc. I put the kit lens back on.

It's a very good lens though. The VR mechanism is amazing when you understand it's workings. Little gyroscopes in the lens detect movement and move one of the lens elements to compensate!! That to me is incredible.

I love my 18-200, I don't leave home without it when vacationing.. Not the sharpest, but so versatile!! Here is an example:

hmm....that shadow's pretty bad...are you SURE that's from the lens and not something overhead? i haven't had that problem...

yes. this is definitely from the lens. pop-up flash is too short and it creates that shadow. i've had exact same issue with my D70 / 18-70

as soon as you get off-camera flash, you will never see that shadow ever again.

Your D90 is 103mm top to bottom, while the D40 is 94mm. Those 9mm might just be the difference....
