Maybe I'll install a turbo/intercooler setup with the money I save?

Frankly, there is no rational reason to obscure your license plate information or your VIN. But it is fun to show off your mad Photoshop skillz by doing so in creative ways.
I realized yesterday, I can see every single VIN for every BMW on the boat across the Atlantic with me. But who cares?

So how is this different than someone in your neighborhood or at your worksite copying your license plate down? Is someone really gonna travel 5 states to steal valuables out of my car?

Since I use my real name as my name on the board, I don't see much benefit in blurring out my plate. It would be relatively easy for someone to find out where I live, where I work, and, consequently, where my car is parked just using my name and location. Pretty much anyone who sees me driving can find out all kinds of information about me with little effort, since I have a ham radio plate on the car. That kind of info can be looked up online for free, from the FCC database.
I suppose blurring the plate, coupled with a cryptic user name on the forum, may make it more difficult for the casual thief to gather information about you. Blurring the plate certainly doesn't make it EASIER to find you, and in that respect, I suppose it's cheap insurance. All in all, though, if someone wants to go to that effort to find information about me, more power to them. I have insurance on the car for any damage or theft, and I follow the Roosevelt philosophy of "Speak softly and carry a big stick" to account for all those who want to track me down for bad purposes unrelated to auto theft. I generally don't cut people off or drive like too much of an idiot or a jerk, though, so there is not likelihood that someone will track me down for that reason. Brien |

Why do they blurr them out on TV shows like COPS? I suppose to protect people, no?

I don't know you, and I'm honestly not trying to offend you. But doesn't that say more about your potential than someone else's? On the other hand, I could never get emotionally involved enought about anything that might be said here to get that pissed off at someone. |

there really is no value, except that people may feel more secure -- albeit that it may be a false sense of security, but nevertheless...
all those people who blur out their license plates - if they are that concerned, i would assume that they don't do any online shopping either? since giving out your CC info online i would say is by far more dangerous. verisign logo or not, the net is not full proof, anyone can steal your identity. I can just take any old license plate number out of the parking lot and go to DMV and buy the personal information including home address, age, bday, etc (although i'm not sure if they still do this). eh....who knows y people do what they do |

This is generally a forum of BMW fanatics. Why would any of us want to go and defile our pride and joys? If you pissed someone off that much, you're really trying hard to do it. I agree with CMD. Now please don't come down here and bash my hood. Haha
